I'm sure I'm not the only one here that hates light coming in to their room when they are sleeping. For about the last year or so I have been using sleep masks. They always tend to leak eventually, usually around the nose, and the straps wear out.

So I guess I have two options, keep replacing crapy sleep masks, or get blackout curtains. If anyone has any success on this front I'd love to hear how you do it.

redneck/ghetto blackout "curtains": take a thick industrial size black trash bag and tape it over the window

I tried wearing sleep masks but they always end up giving me a rash. Don't know what the problem is but I'm going to look into buying blackout curtains.

I've used blackout curtains since I was in middle school. My room is like being 1,500 feet deep in a cave. I even disable the LEDs on my computer and router, so they don't ruin my perfect blackness.

TIP: Use Velcro to keep the curtains from moving away from the windows.

Imagine the shock to your organism if someone walks in and turns on the lights while you are sleeping :D

Can't sleep with sleepmasks, but dark blue curtains and shutters do the trick for me.

Also had to ban any electronics with small LEDs on them from the bedroom.

Sleeping in total darkness feels like dying in a coffin to me.

Can't do it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that blacks out the windows in their room.

I have 2 sets of thick curtains over my bedroom windows. Behind that is the red-neck black trashbags lol. Room stays pitch black even on the brightest day. Also have an A/C running at 62 degrees to keep it cool all year long.

Sleeping in a dark, cool room is comfortable as hell haha.

The rest of my apartment is bright though. I wouldn't recommend living in complete darkness, but having a bedroom that is completely dark is definitely amazing for those of us who prefer late nights and don't like that pesky sunrise interrupting our sleep.

Blackout curtains are the shit. Especially if you have a kid and don't want them waking you up at 5AM.

As for sleep masks - I couldn't deal with something on my face. It would really piss me off.

I actually try to wake up with the sunlight as I find myself more refreshed even if it means loosing a few hours of extra sleep. That said I also do have blackout curtains that can be pulled across my windows if I am hungover/not working. Cost like $40 and you don't have the comfortability problem.

get the Tempur sleeping mask - it's the best I've found:

You have your computer in your bedroom? Shit, I haven't had a computer in my bedroom since I moved out of my parents place..

haha, me either. I kicked the computer and the TV out of the bedroom when I moved from my parents. I have dark brown satin like curtains now and they kill almost all the light in my giant bedroom window. I have used blackout fabric before. You can get it at any fabric store and you can either have it done correctly by a seamstress (which my wife is, very convenient) or you can jury rig it in any number of fashions with velcro, close pins, or even staples.

Just fold over like 6 inches at the top and velcro, pin, staple, whatever and then you have a makeshift curtain, slip the curtain rod thru it and you can open and close it easily. Use a bitter loop at the top on the rod if you have too hard of a time opening it. Cut it in half down the middle to make 2 curtains if you have a big window. I like the light blocked out when I want to sleep but I love the light coming in when I am up for the day.

These days it doesn't really matter for me as I go to bed after dark and am up before dawn to work. Working for yourself doesn't allow much time to sleep in, lol.

I also only by red backlit things, such as an alarm clock etc. Green is too bright and red doesn't hurt the eyes or keep me awake.

I use blackout curtains. My problem it's a bit different, i don't have enough light even when i have the curtains opened :) Anyway, sleeping it's better using curtains than sleep masks.

I don't like sleep masks. I picked up a cheap roll up/down blackout shade at Ikea which works great.

I have not always needed one, but the lights on the outside of my current building keep my bedroom too bright at night. It is great for sleeping in late or taking a nap during the day too.
