On the firing line
Like most, I usually leave my machine on 24 / 7. Well, after a year of this, it's gotten pretty damn slow. Even after clearing all the temp files with CCleaner, cleaning the registry, running virus scans, malware scans, etc.

Running SmartDefrag to keep the HDD defragged.
Kaspersky AV
CCleaner for periodic cleaning of temp files.

It's just annoyingly slow.

Like 1996 Prodigy slow.

Worst case, I'm thinking of just getting a new HDD. 1TB solid state drive to replace this one. I've already got all the files I need backed up, so that's not a problem.

Rather not build a new machine. This one *should* still be fast enough for what I do everyday. 12 gig memory, AMD Thuban hex core, Evga 1gb gpu.

Suggestions? Ideas?

I always power off my machines when I go to bed. By the time I finish making my first cup of tea in the morning they are all booted up anyways.

You might have some shit-ware hiding somewhere, so I'd suggest wiping and re-installing your OS first. Or run a linux live disk and see if it's still running slow.

Look into cleaning the dust out of the inside of your case. Leaving your PC on 24/7 means it's going to accumulate more crud inside. I usually clean the inside of my cases out once every few months.

A while back I had an old PC that was overheating and running slow, so I tossed an extra fan in the PCI slot and that did the trick. You can get one of those fans for like $2 off ebay.

if you reinstall, it'll be as fast as when you got it.

Just reformat the HDD and start over? That'll do it?

Hmmm...

Still... it is an excuse to buy a SSD :)

Yeah, my desk is really dusty. I have to vacuum / blast out the dust every month. As for shit-ware... entirely possibly, unfortunately it's nothing that triggers any of the scanners I use.

Sure, buy an SSD if you wish, you porbably don't need a 1TB one though, you can keep all your big files on a normal disk and it'll still be fast.

You can get a small ssd for under a <$100 that will be big enough to hold all your programs and the OS. You absolutely need an SSD. Go buy one now. You will be amazed.

I have a little over 500 gig worth of files, so, this is overkill. Which is the way I like it. :D

something to think about. Your MOBO may only be SATA2 which means it wont benefit from the upgraded Sata3. If you think you will put it oin your next build get a sata3. If not just get the 2. Should save a few bucks.

SSD no question. Using a PC without one now is like a timewarp.

Actually in the real world, it wont make much difference. The main performance gain from an SSD is IOPS rather than read/write speed.

Yeah you should reformat and see if that helps you out. If it isn't bitrot you may have some underlying hardware issue. Sometimes hardware will work but not to its full potential - often times because it's on the way out.

I would try a fresh Windows install first, then a new HD and/or SSD if still slow.

I am still running a AMD Deneb Quad Core, 8 gigs of memory, and a 1GB Radeon 6850. It has been running almost 24/7 since late 2010 and still feels fast to me.

You have a slightly newer processor with 2 extra cores and 4 more gigs of ram.

1. All programs slow or just browsing?

I have left one of my desktops on since I bought it in 2009 and runs just as fast. Now that I think about it, It has never been off for more than 5 mins and prolly rebooted less than 20 times.

With the amount of memory you have there should be no prob.....

2. What OS?

^^ OS??

Try installing fresh OS....and what is the partition for "C" drive??always make enough free space in C if it not is available.

If your data and application install files are safely elsewhere then ti's time to blat the fucker and reinstall will do nicely. As others have stated - OS / Apps on a SSD drive.

This is all you need do.

run advanced system care in deep clean.

if still slow....

more RAM
SSD
more cores on you CPU
get a VPS to run meanial tasks
