i play guitar/bass/drums and i've always had a difficult time with getting decent vocals - which sucks cause if i had decent vocals i could be a 1 man band :)

so i tried something different today and i really can't discern whether or not it sucks because i've listened to it too much. you can be the judge (don't hold back) :)

(vocals start about 41 seconds into it)

the background music is from a 12 minute collage of riffs i put together awhile ago, full thing is here:

I kind of like it but it's too short of a sample to really tell. The start is a bit bad though.

the vocals aren't bad.
theres a lot worse that have made it big.
Look at smashing pumpkins, he has probably the worst singing voice ever...yet it sounds good and works for him. How about Manson or offspring? Then theres bands that use vocal synthesizers to make themselves sound harmonic like 3 days grace, adema, ozzy(to say the least). Theres also bands that use a different singing style to compensate like Korn, mudvayne, crash test dummies, or spineshank.

I guess what I'm trying to say is; No need to be self conscience. Your voice is fine, work on the style that fits you :music06:

The vocals don't sound bad, but do seem to stand out in the mix a bit too much. They going through a filter? Maybe play with that or the EQ a bit.

Fuckin A you're right!

I love earshot btw.

i've never heard of them... i'll take a listen now..

i'll say this though... my throat is fuckin sore. :\ i give props to hard rock singers who do it for a living.

i thought it was pretty good vocals for the style of the song. the whole arrangement needs some work tho - need a producer?

thx ;) but as i mentioned on the original post, the music was just from a collage of riffs i made, not really meant to be serious.

but since people aren't telling me i'm terrible.. i'm going to try n' put together a whole song n' see what i can come up with in my spare time.

You sound pretty good to me. But if singing like that is hurting your throat, I'd change something. Go see a vocal coach at least once so you can learn how to do it without causing damage to your vocal cords.

Your voice is standard for this type of music. I can think of at least 5 bands if not more that have very similar sounding vocalists. If you really want to make it happen, hit up a vocal coach.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - I love your riffs. I play guitar as well and I love the way you put the riffs together.

oh, trust me i know - haha. i think though since i've finally found a type of voice that doesn't sound terrible, i'm content for now - but i definitely will hit up a coach in the future.. i don't want to end up damaging my voice.

n' thanks

I wasn't trying to be condescending in my post about your voice being standard - your OP made it sound like you thought you had a bad voice and I'm saying your voice sounds just like any other similar band on the radio, so go for it. =)
