So How's Everyone Liking Windows 8

MS released the consumer preview here Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO formats night. It's not too shabby. I'll probably throw it on another computer when I get some time, but I played with it in a VM for a little bit.

The start menu/metro isn't really that jarring and pinning a weather or twitter app on the side is a nice rudimentary form of tiling I suppose.

I wish they added more keyboard-only navigation for metro though because I feel like most people who own a tablet also own a Bluetooth keyboard for typing, but they won't bring a mouse along with them as well. So it would make sense if you could get around by just using the keyboard.

There's probably no real reason to switch/upgrade to it from a business standpoint, Office 15 will run on Windows 7 and the performance upgrades are nice, but RAM is cheap, and you should already have an SSD.

who cares I'm still on XP and it works well.

Who cares I use linux and it works well, auto updates all my programs not just my OS, has a minimal footprint, is stable, free and upgrades when I want it to better versions.

Oh and I can configure it as much as I want.

Is there a way to dual boot it w/ a machine running Windows 7?

The easiest way is to install Virtual Box, like a free version of VMware. From in there you install the .iso version from Microsoft. So you install Win 8 virtually inside Win 7 just to play with.

On the MS site, To find the .ISO file, After Clicking "Get it Now" you will see in small font

"Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup, you can download Windows 8 Consumer Preview in ISO format instead."

Some (ok maybe most) of you will laugh but IMO Windows 7 is perfect.

Does what I need, has never crashed (*knock on wood*), and runs on everything.

Why on Earth do I need my desktop to look like a child's toy with all the tablet-esque tiles?

I'm holding on to 7 for the foreseeable future.

I thought phones were turning into computers but, from the looks of the OP's pics, it's going the other way instead.

windows... blah

if you don't want to pay for software ubuntu/mint is better than windows.

if you don't mind paying for software why chose windows over os X?

Can there ever be a thread about an OS anywhere that doesn't have some basement dwelling neckbeard say that "{Windows|OSX|Linux} sucks and {Windows|OSX|Linux} is better!"

It's a fucking computer operating system. You may as well be arguing over whose toaster is better.

Go get a fucking girlfriend, for Christ's sake.

the main question is, can I upgrade from Windows ME, or will I have to do a fresh install?
And does W8 still have minesweeper? Cause if it doesn't, I won't be upgrading

I just read the FAQ, you actually need to first downgrade to Win 98 SE before upgrading to Win 8. You still got a copy right? At least it's plug and play.

I totally forgot about virtual box. I guess I'll do it that way, no need to fuck up my laptop.

^^ This, exactly. I agree 100%. I couldn't have said it better. Peasants need to get a clue. +kudos +rep +like +thumbsup.

For the record, my toaster is awesome. It has 4 slots and blue lights. My fridge's light is currently broken (I think it's from Apple), and when I want to grab some food at night, I just turn on the toaster instead of replacing the light. I can see everything in a soothing, blue hue. Beat that bitches.

Found a list of keyboard shortcuts that help somewhat. Windows 8 Consumer Preview: Windows Key Keyboard Shortcuts Going to throw this on a real computer a little bit later to see how I like it. Enjoying it so far. The music/weather metro app on the side is awesome. A twitter/rss/big clock distraction would be nice too. I wouldn't mind having more robust tiling, but that can be handled by third party programs I suppose. Same deal with workspaces.

Think it looks gay as AIDs. Microsoft seems to have a hard on for releasing a good OS, then sucking hard for a while, then releasing another good one.

The only people that would say that are macfags, because they know they can't win the argument.
