So is it 1984 yet?

Anyway, the reason I don't care all that much about ACTIVE surveillance of specific targets by a government is because I know I'm not doing anything illegal, etc.

But with widespread targetless PASSIVE surveillance.. if leaked to public.. means your friends, family, etc will know every thing you've said, wrote, etc while being surveilled. For instance, your gf's dad might hear you screwing his daughter saying nasty things. I mean just think of how much shit could hit the fan if everyone you knew knew everything you ever wrote/said to someone else.
We just saw a small example of this in the MGrunin thread and how one of his reddit posts was used against him in court papers. He wasn't even being surveilled.

Netflix, HBO's new service, Amazon prime, etc, etc. It's also really likely that most TV programming will be brought to you via the internet soon.. everything on demand.

Yeah, but you don't have to use it. No one is forcing you. You are giving out the data because its handy to use some of the additional services.
You might be using game console or old laptop connected to tv permanently to access them, but you decide to go easy route.
When it comes to privacy, personal life etc. going easy route will always affect you negatively long term.

(...) and we're supposed to trust them with the data and just hope it's not one day hacked, sold, leaked, etc en masse (...)

Hey WickedJoe,
you are just hoping, not trusting.
Trust is earned!

The data, the smart-thingies... are just developed and marketed to more accurate marketing and joint-venture campaigns.
That means, to get still better ROI.
And yes, the user provides the data... the bl**dy DREAM of any corporate marketing department!

I always feel like Gabe Newell's watching me

But the US govt. definitely is.

So you don't think all TV's at the store will be 'Smart' within 5-10 yrs?

Of course they will.

I hate being on this side of the conspiracy argument. I'm not one of the usual conspiracy guys around here. But god damn.. it's my living room.

I don't think anybody can argue "lol conspiratard" anymore. That ship has long since sailed, and everyone of those tin foil hat wearing motherfuckers that we used to ridicule has essentially been proven correct. But based on a lot of the response, it just doesn't matter.

People don't actually care. Not only will they give up their privacy and freedom for perceived safety, they'll give it up for the ability to watch House of Cards from their couch.

Exhibit A:

If they don't watch you in your bedroom some hacker kid will, so what. Good luck processing hundreds of hours of recording from millions of homes with overweight people wandering around their houses in their underwear, not to mention all the ugly 30-second sex scenes.

Exhibit B:

just don't press the mic button.

either that, live in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere like your avatar once did :p . just dont use anything post-1990.

Exhibit C:

i feel like i'm the only one who doesn't give a fuck if the govt is intruding my privacy
like so what if they up in your shit?

u really think they keepin tabs on u personally? holdin private meetins about ur porn habits and shit and havin a giggle?

And then after a little bit of ridicule from your fellow Wickedfire posters look at how your tone changed:

Ya I actually don't care too much of the gov wants to listen me in a way where they have to actively do something to get my data/voice/video - like flip a switch or whatever.

Peer pressure is a motherfucker.

Why would you not care if the government wants to listen in on you? My guess is you wouldn't have said this a few years ago, but you (and a lot of other people apparently) have been slowly conditioned to just accept what's inevitable. Why would you be so quick to abdicate your own freedoms when you know you haven't done anything to warrant it? Because a handful of strangers on the Internet made you feel like a conspiracy nut. Grow some balls. Here I'll do it for you.

Fuck any of you motherfuckers that think we should all just be ok with the government monitoring everyone. If you want to give up your privacy and let cameras and mics into your living room, get on a reality TV show - problem solved. But don't think it's ok to volunteer the rest of us to have our privacy violated as well.

I do have things to hide. A lot, actually. In fact, the things I wish to hide is roughly equivalent to everything I do in private. If I don't wish to keep it private, I will do it in public.

And that extends to my family. I would like my children to have privacy as well, until they're old enough to make their own bad decisions in public. I don't want some low-level analyst working a shit job with the NSA (or Samsung for that matter) deciding what to do with information gleaned from inside my home.

Better get used to it, all appliances are going to be "smart" soon. There was an article I read somewhere yesterday about how your toaster and refrigerator and the other "thingbots" in your house are conspiring to kill you or some shit.

Beware!

So you don't think all TV's at the store will be 'Smart' within 5-10 yrs?

So don't connect it to the Internet then. It's really not that hard.

I hate being on this side of the conspiracy argument. I'm not one of the usual conspiracy guys around here. But god damn.. it's my living room. I should be able to grab some tweezers to help me jerk off to some porn in my living room.. but noooo.

Vote with your dollars, don't buy a smart TV.

Well it was really my stance since post 1. I was talking about the surveillance in my living room the whole time. That's what my rant was about. So I didn't back away from anything due to peer pressure - not that i'm immune to doing so.

Here's what I think of all types of surveillance.

1) Active surveillance of a target with Warrant - I got almost no prob with this. There are real criminals and even though this can be abused I'm prob ok with this concession.

2) Active surveillance of a target without Warrant - This sucks and I'd vote against it, maybe sign some shit, support new parties, etc.

3) Passive widespread targetless surveillance of society by recording phone/internet/emails/etc - Sucks about 1000x more than #2. This is scary ass shit. I'd easily vote against shit, sign shit, support new parties, rallys, etc. I am aware this shit is going on right now in full force (Thanks Snowden) and should be doing more to protest it - but I've always hated activism and i'm a lazy piece of shit.

4) Non-forced Passive widespread targetless surveillance IN OUR HOMES by recording voice and/or video - Sucks about 1000x more than #3. This is the Samsung tv and this could be what happens with newer cooler tech I'd like to use. But in the end my response would be the same as above but I'd also stop using many technologies. Would I support a bloody revolution over it? I might support it but not fight in it because this is optional shit that I can take into my house for fun or convenience. It sucks bad that I'd have to live like the Amish.

5) Forced Passive widespread targetless surveillance IN OUR HOMES by recording voice and/or video - Sucks about 1000x more than #4. This also includes if all of society is being monitored at their home 24/7 w/out knowing about it. This is my line in the fucking sand. If we couldn't get it to stop I'd fully support a bloody revolution at this point.. no joke. I'd even be glad to participate in the shooting of these corporate/government slave masters.

But UG, you're definitely right about how they're pushing this shit on us gradually so it's harder to see and fight. They are also extremely consistent at it while we're not consistent fighting it because we're busy with our jobs and lives. The biggest reason we'll lose is because of newer generations. The newer generations give less and less of a shit about privacy.. so they won't bother fighting for it. It will be 'normal' for them to be surveilled.

Some of you "don't buy smart TV" or "don't turn this feature" guys miss the point completely.
The point is that no company (we are not even talking government, we are talking about business company!) should dare even consider recording that. Even consideration of it should be outrageous, let alone the actual fact of this happening!

Of course they will.

Thank you for writing this. I was reading this thread thinking how sad it is that so many are defending this stuff.

By the way, I am pissed that everyone can just zoom in on my house and backyard anytime they want. That's BS too.
