yeah read that a while ago but for me the most interesting part was how much money they spent marketing the damn thing
that's probably why myspace took off and other networks like friendster and orkut basically faded away

I don't like the "Myspace was not a viral success" line... Okay, so the company had 3 million email addresses. So?

I can still remember going out to a bar, and for the first time having my buddy mention to me, "Dude, you should really get on myspace. It's like a dating site, and you just hit on your friend's chick friends." I was sold. :D

I actually think the biggest reason that Myspace took off was when major label recording artists joined. When they started releasing exclusive content and tracks, it gave their large fan bases an incentive to sign up. When people like Trent Reznor signed up, you can see a big spike in members joining.

Obviously, to get to the point where they could attract these major label recording artists they had to market their service very aggressively. With the huge DB that eUniverse had, they were able to get a lot of users from their other services to sign up initially.

Try 30 million. But I agree with you that the largest factor in Myspace's growth was word of mouth, once the initial mass exposure took place. But without that first advertising campaign to get users, I doubt Myspace would have been a success.
