I use Mac, but at home my wife / kids use windows with IE. I recently had to reinstall windows due to it being knobbled by a virus. I suppose I pretty much know what the answers are going to be, but what do you guys recommend in the way of internet security / anti spyware/virus software.
( thats quite enough slashes in one post )

I appreciate that Firefox is a much better browser, but my family have minds of their own and I can't legally beat them, so I need to compromise.

Well you really should try and talk them into firefox, it may seem weird to them at first but sooner or later they'll probably prefer it. And if not, I'm sure there is a skin/theme for firefox that makes it look just like internet explorer. As for software protetion, IMO the best solution is prevx edge

I've only been using it for about a month but so far it has managed to block everything that i've thrown at it. It works as a "behavior" blocker instead of relying on virus signature databases so it can pickup new and undetected viruses/trojans before the virus companies can. Checkout this video of it in action:

And if you already have spyware, checkout prevx CSI which is a post-infection cleaner:

Remove the launch icon for IE from the desktop, start menu and All Programs list and replace it with Firefox. Alternatively, replace the icon for FF with the IE one and see how long it takes them to even notice.

If you're the man in the house, tell the kids that they aren't allowed to use IE anymore, plain and simple.

Tell them that they aren't, under any circumstances, allowed to install toolbars, smiley faces, or any other suspect bullshit like that. Teach them. Don't give them admin privileges. Lock down the boxes so that they need to ask you if they want to do anything.

Otherwise I just use AVG free and have been without problems for a very long time.

Use firefox, set them up with a non admin account and as soon as you get it set up use acronis true image to make an image of the drive (with all your apps installed). Burn it to a DVD or put it on an external. Next time this happens copy their bookmarks, photos and ducuments and restore the image.

I just uninstalled Zonealarm and AVG after using that combo for ages, and installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 which has been great so far. Found crap AVG couldn't.

lulz Nacho... All you need is a registry cleaner and spam tool and i bet that comp runs like a speed demon.

OP: I strayed from Zonelabs Zone alarm (got CA from my isp for free, garbage) for about a year until last week I got a virus that made a list of 42 of my logins and passwords in a temp folder from the FF password completion tool.

Went back to Zonealarm security suite and its pretty awesome. I changed all my passwords. Never will use autocomplete for anything beyond my papajohns account. I put roboform on a jump drive for those sites that I don't want to type in the pw every time. All is right in the world....so far... :party-smiley-004:

They offer a 15 or 30 day trial for their stuff so try it out.

LOL @nacho

What FatBat said, just lay down the law or point the IE shortcut to Firefox.

I've been using Comodo + AVG for ages with no problems.

But the real question- does any of that stuff protect you from the make monies "porno virus"?

If you've got a multiuser computer, and some of the people that use it are purely gamers, I recommend Bit Defender. It's not the best, but it is one of the better ones that idiot proofed, whilst still having a power user section.

My only problem with it is that it keeps telling me my license expired, even though I just bought a new one.
I love it when companies basically make you pirate the product to get it working.

Windows Defender is one of the stronger anti-spyware products out there. You can also modify user permissions to prevent programs from being installed, and use Firefox. For Anti-Virus, Symantec (both Norton + Symantec Corporate) products have served me well for a number of years. From my past experience fixing computers, McAfee isn't as strong in certain areas. Keep virus + anti-spyware definitions up to date, your computer locked down, and using Firefox, and you should be good.
