Standing Desks

The reason I picked this one is because no standing desk could adjust to my height (i want my laptop monitor on my eyes level)

There used to be several hydraulic sitting/standing desks that were split level, with a separate motorized lifting shelf for monitors. The office furniture company my girlfriend work for 10 years ago made one, as did the usual suspects like Herman Miller and Steelcase. Now the norm is to use a hydraulic monitor arm to adjust the screen height. You can get a tray version of the same thing for a laptop.

All products sold in UK has a 20% VAT markup. Its a bitch.

Yeah, but at least you pay the sticker price. There are no surprises. In Canada and the US you pay the tax when you get to the cashier, on top of whatever the sticker price is. The % varies from province to province and state to state, but in some places it's well into the teens.

I was also considering Ikea and saving a ton o money. They usually make quality products from what I've seen - considering price. But in the end i wanted something that seemed super sturdy and I could lean on, etc. But you can prob lean on the Ikea desk if you put it up against a wall.

I've never been overly impressed with the quality from Ikea.

The way I view anything from Ikea is, it's cheaper then alternatives but I don't expect to last as long.

If it lasts a year or two then it's doing alright.

Ikea does make some crap, but their office furniture has always been pretty solid. Their Galant desk system is built on a heavy duty steel frame. I've used Galant desks a lot, both in offices I worked in and at home. I'm working on an L shape one right now. I weigh about 240 pounds and have no problem standing on my desk. It looks like Galant might be being phased out/or combined with a new system called Bekant, which the lifting desk they sell is part of. I'm sure it's quality.

Does anyone know of a standing desk just big enough for a laptop?

There are tons of standing tables out there built on the same kind of hydraulic pistons that you find in chairs, with or without wheels. Sometimes referred to as "pub tables" as well. Search amazon for "standing laptop table", they've got a bunch.

do these things work for those of us with a fuckload of monitors?

i've always wanted to get one of these desks but figured changing the height frequently is a pita if you're running with 3-6 monitors

Why not? There are load of examples in the links above of multi monitor setups. There are some burly monitor arms out there that can hold up to 6 monitors. I guess it all depends on the size of the monitors and how you like to configure them. You're not going to fit 6 across on one of these desks, but two rows of 3 stacked is doable.

Yer it looks like a decent system and for $500 the price is right.

I've tossing up between getting one of those really good office chairs with proper back support or one of these.

I'm leaning towards this mainly because standing doesn't fuck my back up nearly as much as sitting does.

Any decent alternatives to walking/standing? I'd be ok with standing for a few hours , but it seems to me like either a treaddesk or similar would be much more healthy than just standing.

Kind of thinking about some sort of static bicycle or such that would be on-level with my PC.

I've been using a standing desk for about 3 months now and IMO the productivity boost is definitely worth the initial pain and discomfort.

One super important thing is having a comfy anti-fatigue mat. Otherwise your feet will suffer. I bought this one and I'm very happy with it:
