Switching from windows to mac...good decision?

Try it and if you like it better switch.

OSX is a solid system because it's almost pointless to write a trojan or virus for it. If you want your message to be heard you target windows. If OSX was more widely used than windows the majority of them would be wrote for OSX.

I used to be all PC but switched Mac and have no reason to go back. Computer has never crashed, never been infected, and runs very smoothly.

With Windows all I remember was crashing, having to do virus scans, and waiting 5 minutes for the damn thing to boot up.

I recommend Macs to people too dumb to avoid PC malware.

I'm not saying Macs aren't reliable machines, they just cost 4x as much as their PC counterparts.

True, unless your actually developing software for windows, what is the point to have it?

yeah macs are designed to be fool proof so you pretty much cant fuck it up if you tried... windows dosn't assume you're an idiot and gives you total control over the software you paid for (or not), even if that means you fuck it up. I run vista and it has never crashed on me, its stable as a fuckin rock and it does everything i need and want it to do, i have an uptime of just over 3 weeks at the moment and its still as fast as the day i booted it up. Why would i go out and pay a shitload for a mac just cos its got fancy hip windows-bashing marketing and a shiny exterior?

dont get me started on the iphone.. holy shit.

I've used Windows, Linux, and OSX before (not necessarily in the same timespan). I can honestly say that in my experience there is nothing you can accomplish with a Macintosh that couldn't be done in a windows or linux environment, and probably faster.

Just to reiterate, I've owned and used a Mac before. I really see no purpose in owning/using one other than if it's a preferential decision.

if you want proprietary hardware and more restrictions than windows, then go for it

That's the one thing that most people don't actually realize about Apple. If you think Microsoft is restrictive, good luck.

I'm not saying Macs aren't reliable machines, they just cost 4x as much as their PC counterparts.

Ah yes, the "Apple Tax".

Generally people like us that are generally a lot better with computers than the average user, will find macs restrictive and too simple. If I have a problem, I like being able to quickly look in through the settings and change whatever I need, even if I might fuck something up.

After so many years of using Windows, it'd be hard to go to a mac now.

So I'm thinking about buying a macbook, which would be by first mac computer and I'm wondering what you people who switched from windows xp/vista think about your macs? Is it just as easy to pirate software? Do they run much smoother? Do they crash or freeze much? Do applications also available for windows run better on macs?

Of course you should get a Mac.

No they don't crash.

Pirate software, yes, yes you can do that, but that's bad.

I'd go for the middle one, the base model doesn't have a superdirve (dual layer burner) and the black one does not offer enough to warrant the extra cost, imo.

i'm typing on a macbook right now and i LOVE it. mainly because the desktop i was using is five years old and has some hardware issues. a new PC is headed my way in a few days... quadcore 2.66ghz. i might change my mind when i get that puppy.

I switched and I like it. But I went from a desktop on XP to a laptop (MBP) on OS X so I'm sure the desktop -> laptop switch really helped me enjoy the switch better. I will honestly never go windows again, no need to. With windows, I found myself needing distractions so I played video games. On OS X, I can work for 12 hours straight only stopping to take a piss/shit and get food. I have games on here (and they run fine) but I never play them. I enjoy working in the OS X environment tons more than XP. Just my $.02

Yeah yeah yeah. Nice work! I've been reading through these forums for about a year now and still haven't managed to actually start anything. I think my problem is that I get to involved in reading what to do without actually doing any of it.

You need to read Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy. I think it was barman who recommended it in another thread a little over a week ago. I just finished it 2 days ago, but applying the tips it has over the last 4 days I've probably finished more than I do in 10 days.

I've always had the problem of reading what to do but never actually doing it.

Yeah, let's all choose a machine based on what it looks like rather than how functional it is.

Ive never been one for fancy coloured gimmicks and so on so if they build one that looks like a pc i might be interested in switching.

i got a new macbook i love it.
My pc took a shitter and i never looked back.
i dont think my mac has crashed once

I used to use a PC. I had nothing but problems, crashing, viruses, driver conflicts....i spent more time fixing it than actually using it....fuckin nightmare. Switched to OSX and will never go back to windows...actually i dont have to since I run XP on my mac, and it runs faster than on a PC anyway. I'm selling my G5 to get a macbook pro. Definitely worth it....you get what you pay for. And it's virtually impossible to get a virus with a mac. So all you Vista users have fun with your built in mouse driver conflicts (i've seen 2 computers with vista out of the box with driver conflicts...fuckin lame)

they just cost 4x as much as their PC counterparts.
Not true, at least as of 6 months ago when I got my Macbook. I'm someone who would never have gone for a Mac in the past (having been a computer tech, and been tinkering with/building computers for years, I don't need the "safety" of a Mac), but I needed a 13" laptop to replace my old Dell 15.4". I spec'd out a number of computers including the Macbook, Dell XPS 13" (after the affiliate coupon), Sony Vaio, and a few more, but somehow the Macbook came out to be cheaper than all of the other configurations, equipped with the same processor, HD, RAM (added after-market), and all else. The Macbook also has better battery life than some of the PC laptops that I looked at.

Even if I had to pay for my Windows copy (got it for free through an education deal I had access to), it's cheaper. At first I put Vista on the laptop in addition to Mac OS, but I soon "upgraded" the Windows partition to XP Pro.

Would I have gotten a Macbook pro? No. I don't think that has enough added value for the money, for the features I need. A regular Macbook though? Any day.

In my opinion, it's virtually impossible to get a virus on a PC if it's properly secured, so that's not an issue for me. I've seen Mac computers hacked worse than PCs, so don't count on not running anti-virus on a Mac (and don't count that Symantec corporate edition will catch all Linux-based exploits, either...).

I switch from Windows XP to OSX, and never looked back. Another sweet benefit is the OSX is UNIX! There is nothing more Reliable than UNIX. I mean come one, programming wise, and stability wise, it's Unix!!

If you are serious about getting work done, Switch from XP, you life is going to be a lot easier. ALOT. I mean with Windows, there are so many distractions, but I can work 16 to 36 hours straight without worrying about some dumbass problem on my mac.
I mean half the time a Windows Computer is being worked in is when someone is trying to fix it.

I program in C++, Perl, Php, Ruby, and some other languages, Leopard has most of all that installed already. I don't have to specially configure anything to work. I can jump in and program.

My MacBook Pro is a 2.6 Duo Core with 4GB of RAM, so it runs so smooth, and I haven't noticed any loading time for any of my programs, even Photoshop! When I went back to my parent's Windows, Holy shit, man that thing was slowwwww.

And I can't live without Expose.

Downloading Pirated Programs, music, etc, is actually more easier!! OMG, I also got VisualHub, so I can convert any video to anything I want, from flv, to mp4, DVD, wmv. I can sit here download youtube videos all day, convert them in seconds into any form. To find some great programs goto iusethis osx software: New Releases, and our Sweden friends at the pirate bay. It's like so easy now to pirate on a mac.
