Tablets.. .Which one?

just want to bump this thread for two reasons -

very curious what the OP ended up doing and I am also shopping around for a new tablet, wanting to give mine to the wife.

what im looking for now: 2gb/ssd, usb 3, 10.1", windows 7 or android, and a super thin form factor. im really looking for the best deal out there right now, ive checked all of the obvious places but wanted to see if anyone had any preferences since there have been at least 5 different tablet threads in the past month.

you guys and all your sexy ass hardware

this is all the motivation a man needs

HP is supposed to be selling another batch of touchpads soon. I would try to get one of those for $100.

I am not a big techie - but I am alwyas moving my smartphone at starbucks and meetings so people will not spill their coffee on it. Not that this happens al of the time, but it is a concern for me.

Tablets are used on the kitchen table at breakfast, at starbucks near liquids, etc.

I was thinking a waterproof tablet would be a smart choice for true durability.

I mean you cannot avoid turbulence on the plane and if the tablet is on the tray next to your coffee - that's bad for the tablet I would assume.

So I am looking at the following:

Fujitsu’s Waterproof LTE F-01D Android Tablet To Land In Japan Next Month | TechCrunch

Unless everyone feels the current tablets are durable?

Here's what I use a tablet for: Web browsing, email, videos, remote desktop. That's it. The iPad's hardware is just nicer than the others, there's no denying that... if you use all of them for a few days you'll really see the difference.

I've never really cared about flash, because Youtube works, Netflix works, there are a million games to choose from, etc... I also don't give a shit about the camera. I've never used a camera on any tablet for anything other than Skype, so it's not really a concern. As for the other concerns, multitasking is simple on the iPad now and you can get USB adapters on monoprice.com for like $5.

It just comes down to this... I just want shit to work and be fast. I don't want to root my device or use it as a laptop replacement. For doing the things I use a tablet for, the iPad is perfect. All the other tablet's I've owned either have hardware issues or software issues. A lot of people like Android (and I've been using it on my phone since day one), but I fucking hate it on tablets. Force closes, slow, and a lack of good apps.

i'll second that

FYI: I ended up going with the motorola xoom because i won a FLUKE bid on ebay for 319 plus shipping. android 3.3 1G/32G dual core. Thing is soo sweet hasn't crashed in days. It is SUCH a cool toy - its great for taking to the bathroom with you if you don't want to interrupt a skype chat or something. i also like it for my office because i can carry it around and pull up websites and show employees rather having them open a new tab.

tablets are just great gateway devices. they are what you use while you get your oil changed, on the couch, in traffic etc.

question though - anyone have a portfolio/case they are REALLY happy with? i ordered one from newegg that doesn't fit right. IPAD/IPAD2 cases dont fit it because it is slightly larger. anyone?

IMO, there are no other tablets that offer value for money post purchase. Id take an iPad and then JB it to get access to everything.

i would go for the big Iphone. Samsung Galaxy it's also very good, but still not as good as the Ipad. I would stay away from HP anyway, heard lot of complains about it.

Thoughts on the FusionGarage Grid 10?
Just $299 (I know video says $499, but they dropped it by $200).

Happy iPad user here. The biggest downside (IMO) is no SD slot. The biggest upside (IMO) are the apps.

Remote into my Win 7 machine

iPad can do that.

Use spreadsheets, preferably OpenOffice, but if I can remote into the Beast, then don't need to have it on the tablet

Netflix - I know some tablets don't support it

Without playing with all the different tablets, the iPad just doesn't seem to stack up on paper.

"Playing" with something has never really given me a good picture of it. You'll only know if you really like it after you've owned it for a couple weeks and used it for everything you bought it for.

Anybody else prefer the iPad over XXXXX brand? If so, why?

I don't have much experience with other tablets but I personally like OSX over Android.

I just want to get the best tablet available right now. Don't really care what name is stamped on it even though it could perform the tasks I need.

The iPad is a great tablet. It's fast, well designed, and works. I haven't had any problems running applications and I even left it out in the rain overnight and watched it fall off a van onto concrete (works fine).

I had an iPad and now I have an iPad 2. I wouldn't bother going for anything else.

There's not really any competition price wise. They're all around the same price. I guess you could argue that the SD slot can get you more storage cheaper but last time I checked SD cards weren't that cheap anyway. Plus, I've always opted for the 16gb wifi (cheapest) version of the iPad and I've never really wished that I had more space. I don't usually use my iPad anywhere that doesn't have wifi but 3G could be nice, I guess.

All of the things that people try to tell you that Android tablets can do that the iPad can't aren't usually things that make sense to me to use a tablet for. I'm not trying to replace my laptop/desktop with it, as I don't think that's what it's for. Unless, of course, all you do is some basic browsing etc.

What I do use my iPad for

Browsing the Internet when taking a shit. Honestly if I could only use my iPad while I was taking a shit I'd probably still buy one. Ill give you one guess what I'm doing right now.

I use it when I'm on the couch/bed and I want to be able to look shit up, check twitter, email etc.

Sometimes I use it to sketch things out with a stylus for design work. I also use it as a portfolio presentation tool if I'm meeting somebody somewhere that seems awkward to bust out my laptop.

I connect it to my tv to play movies. There's also some games that are cool to play around with on the tv but they get old quick, like that racing game that uses the accelerometer.

I use it to watch Hulu/Netflix or any of the NBC/ABC/TNT apps while I'm in my car stealing wifi from a nail salon next to Quiznos on my lunch break.

The best thing about the iPad is that I know what it does well and that it's always going to do those things well without me having to fuck with anything. It just works.

In my opinion, none of the other tablets can compare. Truthfully, I haven't spent much time using any of them but I've played around with a few of them at Best Buy and none of their UIs are anywhere near as clean and snappy as iOS.

I do recommend getting a case for it, and definitely not the Apple smart cover bullshit. I had that thing pop off when I first got my iPad 2 and my screen got cracked because it slipped out of my hands. I tried a few cases but this one is my favorite http://www.speckproducts.com/tablet-ipad-cases/ipad-2-cases/pixelskin-hd-wrap-for-ipad-2.html I got it in black from Target for like $35. There are some others that are really nice but make sure you get one that allows you to prop it up for typing and watching media. Trying to get your ipad to stand up at a good angle is ridiculous without a nice case.

I guess I'm a sucker for anything Apple makes but it all works together nicely. Especially with all of the new iCloud stuff coming out soon. All my contacts, apps etc. are all synced between my iPhone, mac, and iPad without having to put any effort into it. It just does it by itself.

I haven't used iTunes match much yet because it's still kind of sketchy but when the public version comes out, I'm sure it will be much better. $25/year to have all your music available on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad is pretty cool. With iOS 5 the iPad2 gets some cool gestures too.

@heroiceric: This is the most insightful review or post about iPad and iPad 2 I have ever read. Now, I am starting to fall in love with iPad. Better get one for myself.

@OP: iPad does it all and it's from Apple. It is the bomb! Top notch quality. Will be reading your thread and waiting what brand will you go for:)

I'm personally an Android fan. I love the ability to customize everything, Multitask, load different ROMs, etc etc. With that said though I always recommend you stick with whatever platform you already own. IMO you're invested to Apple marketplace etc and should stick with it. Ecsepcially with iCloud coming out any week now. As much as it pains me to say get the iPad 2 or wait for the iPad 3. I personally love the Tab 10.1, but I've had several Android phones.
