a) One of judges Michael Arrington was an early stage investor in Layer.
b) He did his best to bring up doubt about Cota's project even though his questions had been answered multiple times.

A simple communications app (Layer) which hopes to run on proprietary phone os's and other apps, without being blocked, or simply competed against by copy cats, and is seed funded by TechCrunch Founder, Judge, and conference lead interviewer Arrington, beats out the first viable wireless power system (cota), that's patented, and in final stages of FCC approval?

I sense extreme collusion.

Simplest point of proof, the iPhone 5 charger is 5 watts, while a USB port is 2.5 watts and basically the minimum to charge the device. He says himself he delivers about a third of a standard USB connection. The iPhone 5 won't charge on 1 watt, period.
