These ads have been all over the TV here in Australia... no wonder I'm white as a ghost and taking vitamin D supplements.

if that easy to get skin cancer im sure everyone would have it...that commercial is so inaccurate..

lol not far off...

At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70

Having been treated in the last 6 years for two cases of melanoma, caused by my earlier "sun loving" lifestyle, I'm very wary now of any excessive exposure to the sun.

As for that "healthy" tan look, I know so many once gorgeous Aussie girls that now look like dried prunes close up, as sun baking does them no favours as they grow older.

Give me an older woman with the "peaches and cream" look any day.

.

I used to get frustrated when my gf (now wife) would go insane about sun tan lotion, applying/re-applying everytime we went out but it really is a good thing. Plus like SandnSurf said, later on in life, tanners really do look like shit.

Often when I go overseas I get comments like "You come from Africa so how come you not tanned?"

I know what sun is and so I keep my ass out of it! The only rays I catch are the ones coming out of my monitor!

Sometimes i do think maybe they go a bit too far with the scare tactics maybe sunscreen sales are down this year, but excessive tanning is a bit stupid.

I'll take my chances...It seems that the rays are much stronger in austrailia than in new jersey. I go all summer never using sunscreen, rarely burn and get a nice tan...nothing crazy, and I don't go laying around tanning, It's just that I'm always outside.

tanning gets you laid more often. true story.

and who the fuck cares if you get skin cancer by the time you're 70? everyone dies sooner or later.

Overdone and frightening ads work much better. That's why they do them
But then again too much of something cannot be good for you, same goes for tanning :)

This is my doc's opinion: Eat your damn antioxidants and A LOT of them so the body can deal with the oxidative stress from UV rays. But nobody ever talks about that.

And do you listen to your doctor's advice? And how is it working for you :)

This one I do, because his advice has always been spot on and he's helped me fix a lot of what I've fucked up in my younger years. He advocates a mix of mainstream and alternative methods, mixed in with traditional chinese, acupuncture and god know what else, along with 30 years of experience. I'd say that guy has a very keen understanding of human body. Too bad he's stuck here in a small country in the middle of nowhere.

If only I had the discipline and follow through with everything he suggests... :]
