Thailand vs Hawaii

Wow, I never would have guessed a US state was racist against white people?!

I'm ethnically Indian, so I wonder what effect that would have in Hawaii since race is just a big deal.

I have wanted to see Hawaii's unique scenes like the Green-sand beach, the observatories, the rainforest jungles and dive Molokini, but I keep hearing that if you stray from the tourist spots like Waikiki you can get fucked over real fast just for being white.

If I'm only going for the resorts then I can do better in Thailand.... For 1/3rd the price.

Lies... I've been to Honolulu/Waikiki far to many times, compared to some of the countries I've been to, there are no problems with whites here. Diving molokini is amazing if your into scuba. I've done it 3 times.

The racist folk in Hawaii are racists against all non-Samoans. You'd be just as bad off, I believe.

Of course they may hate whitey just a bit more because of the whole Captain Cook fiasco.

I dunno Dres, I know a half-samoan-half-whitey that grew up in Maui and he has a thing to two to say about the racism there that has really put me off of the non-touristy places. (Which Hon/Waikiki definitely are not!)

Having spent a month a year on the big island for at least 10 years and having friends live there for 5+ years, I hate to say it but that video is fairly accurate. If you make your money from somewhere other than the island and come across as a tourist, you'll probably be fine. As soon as you start acting like you're local, they'll remind you that you aren't. My friends that lived there were opening a business and I told them to go chat with the local town elder early. They thought I was kidding. When construction was shut down and most of their equipment stolen, they talked to the elder. A few days later, construction started again and most of the equipment was returned. Then every single manager they had embezzled money, so they finally gave up. Great place to visit though.

Everyone I know that was stationed in Hawaii hated it after the first month, sometimes less.

Locals picking fights, attempted car jackings, etc. are common in stories. Mind you, none of this happened to me (never been there) but I've heard the same thing from too many people to count now. There's definitely something going on there.

YMMV from that of active duty military, though.

Don't really like Hawaii. Too far away from the rest of the U.S (timezones). Everything is expensive due to being in the middle of no where. I felt stranded on an island in the ocean. Weather was okay (pretty much what you would expect). I'm going to check out a few other places. Glad I knocked that one off my list early.

I didn't really have any problems with the locals seeing as I have a silky smooth caramel complexion and a thick body. They thought I was Samoan. In Puerto Rico, they thought I was Puerto Rican. Who knows.

Okay guys, I've lived in in hawaii for 28 years (my whole life minus college) and this is the truth about Hawaii. Yes there are a lot of ignorant, racist people here. They are the equivalent of white trash in the south only they're brown. If you want to avoid them the only place to live is Honolulu. I grew up on the Big Island and you can't get away from people like that, I would never live there again.

That being said I believe in Hawaii (Oahu) we have the best quality of life in the world. You get paradise and you get city life...I think the population on Oahu is about 1 million. As someone said there are a lot of bums here. We do have a bad homeless problem but it's probably because if you were going to be homeless it might as well be in Hawai right? I'm sure Thailand has more homeless people though. Hopefully our gov't will fix this.

If you're in the military you probably would hate it here because the base sucks, it's in the middle of nowhere, and alot of people in the military are not used to our different culture out here. If you are open minded you'll get by fine.

After I left the big island to go to Seattle I said I would never go back to Hawaii and then I came to Honolulu to finish school and this is truly the best place to live in the world in my opinion (I've been everywhere.) But yes, people here are racist...fortunately if you live on Oahu you won't really come across that much. I used to deal with retards every day on the Big Island but practically never deal with that here because people are less stupid for a lack of a better way to put it.

Luke P- Green Sand Beach is my favorite beach in the world. You have to go man, it's amazing.

problem solved, and also this is the reason that I would not live in Hawaii..

Not sure I follow. You would NOT live in Hawaii because of a lack of lady mans?

jeez - you're right.

OP, just go to Europe. Can't go wrong with spain for entertainment/women that aren't men/better scenery. Plus as long as you stay away from east Europe, noone will kidnap you/stab you for being American.

There is no anti american thing going on in East Europe.

Cool but since you've lived on the island your whole life but 4 years of college in Wash., how can you say its the best place to live in the world?

Don't get me wrong, hawaii is nice but I don't think it's the best lol.

Well my opinion is based on the experiences that I've had during my visits to canada, mexico, all of western europe, brazil, Japan, and the Phillipines. All were nice but in my opinion Hawaii was the best. Of course you could argue about where in the world is best until the cows come home or you could believe one of those studies that say Switzerland has the best quality of life in the world. Just my opinion.

I grew up in Hawai'i, lived there for 13 years as a white kid, never once had to defend myself from racism. This was on the Big Island, so I can't speak for any other islands. But I think the extent of racism there is like anywhere else in the US, there are just some streets / areas that you don't want to walk through alone, and you definitely don't want to possess a cocky attitude. Get a feel for the people, use your best judgement, and pick and choose the areas you want to hang out at. Believe me, it's actually takes a little bit of work to end up in the bad areas of Hawai'i.

That's funny that our experiences on living on the Big Island were so different. What part did you live? I was in Kapoho and Hilo, and knew my limits on where I should hang out. Also, I'm a large dude, so that maybe played a role in my never having been in a fight.

Also grew up on the Big Island (South Kona), and anti-white racism was intense.

I left in my early 20s and would not go back.

I grew up in Kapoho too. How old are you? I never really had any bad experiences, I just witnessed a lot of it and it was more annoying than anything. I would prefer to just not be around people like that.

Crazy, I always heard about surfers being like that and super territorial but didn't realize the whole place wanted to kill whitey haha.

Makes no sense to compare Hawaii and Thailand, one state in the US with the entire country of Thailand, way to diverse. If you like Hawaii then a better comparison would be Phuket. Both are tropical islands that are highly touristed and are among the most expensive places in their respective countries.
