Puerto Rico last night passed their referrendum on statehood last night.

The US government has to approve it, but it is quite likely that it will go through. The US will grow to 51 states total.

election woulda been much different had this been mainstream news. there is no upside to making that cesspool a state. Just piss off more resources and welfare

We may as well make Mexico the 52nd state. Actually come to think of it, the U.S. is Mexico's 2nd state. Yay United States of Mexico.

Interestingly enough, i've read a few articles on PR.

It seems they get billions in tax benefits & subsidies, yet pay 0 taxes to the federal government. If they become a state, they start paying.

Where are they going to put the extra star? Puerto Rico ruining everything up in here.

The stars would probably be reconfigured to 3 rows of 9 and 3 rows of 8.

The stars have been rearranged many times in the past as states were added, most recently from 48 to 49 for Alaska, then to the current 50 for Hawaii.

My god our news outlets in this country are terrible. I have to read something like this on WickedFire lol. And I watch the news all the time...

I've known for a long time this was coming up but forgot. My understanding is that the U.S. govt is extremely likely to abide by what they select. Wikipedia has this:
Democratic Party 2012 Platform

We commit to moving resolution of the status issue forward with the goal of resolving it expeditiously. If local efforts in Puerto Rico to resolve the status issue do not provide a clear result in the short term, the President should support, and Congress should enact, self-executing legislation that specifies in advance for the people of Puerto Rico a set of clear status options, such as those recommended in the White House Task Force Report on Puerto Rico, which the United States is politically committed to fulfilling.

Maybe all the ghetto Puerto Rican skanks can stop with all the "SOY BORICUA!!!" bs now...

Puerto Rico instead of Bermuda?? Someone needs to be fired.

I'd be VERY surprised if this actually happens.

So.. I should be buying stock in flag making factories? They're going to have a lot of shit to update.

Given that PR's pro-statehood governor just lost and his replacement is in favor of the status quo, I have a feeling you're probably right.
