Bwah, bunch of conspiracy theorists on here... everything happened exactly as the US govt claimed.
A group of guys in Afghanistan (mostly Saudis though) living in caves, orchestrated a huge terrorist plot. They boarded planes heavily armed with tiny box cutters, and took control of said planes with nobody defending themselves against the box cutting wielding terrorists. From there, they circumvented NORAD, and the defense dept simply forgot to scramble jets after the distress signals from the pilots. With almost no flying experience, they flew the planes with military precision into the WTC towers, and the Pentagon (which ironically is one the the most highly guarded buildings in the entire world).
These cave dwelling terrorists were so good, not only did they defy physics and dumbfound engineers across the globe by bringing down both WTC towers in an almost perfect implosion style, but they even managed to do the same with WTC7! The heros on the Pennsylvania flight though not only overtook the terrorists, but about a dozen of them managed to get crystal clear cell phone calls off while whizzing through the air at 36,000 feet, before crashing.
That's exactly how it happened, so don't question it, or else you'll be labeled as a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist!

Oh man I thought I was in for a conspiracy fight when I saw 22 posts. Buts its just you brit talking about paying the bbc, very boring. Even if you are absolutely sure that Bin Laden and all that jazz is for real you should still watch the documentary.
It is not only about our current situation, it explains how governments found power by having an enemy to protect us from. Communists, cold-war Russians, muslim terrorists the point is that without the absolute fear we would not allow the government to control our lives in exchange for safety. If they did not have an enemy like the Japanese or Germans then they invented one to keep power.
Watch Goodnight and Good Luck its a great movie dealing with the communist scares our country went though. You guys should really find all the propaganda against the communists in the 50's. Americans were scared shit less that their neighbors could be reds.

And all this despite the terrorist pilots' inability to fly cessnas well enough to pass flight tests, the collapsing buildings defying the laws of physics, the steel girders sliced by jet fuel into tractor trailer truck length sections for easy haul away, the lack of reconstructive investigation conducted by any agency, the magic passport that flew out of the flaming fireballs and were found on the streets of Manhattan, the magic jet fuel that vaporized concrete and melted steel, the military war games in place that mimicked the events that transpired, and the FBI agents living with the terrorists.
Coming from the other side of the fence here. Russia and USA had major friction and both had nuclear weapons.
My Dad fought in the Russian Afghanistan war, and saw Americans helping the Afgan fighters. The war was never direct, both countries would take jabs at each other through non direct avenues. There was a chance it could have gotten out of control.

After studying the documentary for all those 10 minutes of my life, I have largely decided that certain parts were unreliable. Yes it's useful to have an enemy, yes some governments often work better in times of war (What made the US the leader? WW2, they controlled the manufacturing while Europe was in a shitstorm) but not all governments. Look at the Norwegians. Al Qaeda was created by the US / UK however it is obvious that they just went out of control, after all, we just did exactly what the Russians had done.
