I was having a discussion with a friend in a bar yesterday. He recently watched The Box. For those that don't know the movie, it's a psychological thriller that has Cameron Diaz and James Marsden in the leading roles. They play a young married couple who receive a wooden box on their doorstep. Inside the box is a button. If the button is pushed, they get one million dollars, but someone in the world will die.

My friend said that he would press the button, given the chance. He doesn't know that person, so it wouldn't affect him. I replied that I wouldn't do it, because I wouldn't be able to live with the feeling of having taken someone's life. My friend continued that he thought about it for a while after watching the movie and concluded that at least 90% of the people would push the button, if they think about it long enough. Now I'm wondering what you guys would you.

Would you press the button?
If you do, then ...
1) You get 5 million dollar. "The Box" is set in 1976, so let's make it more interesting :)
2) Someone in the world dies. Someone you don't know.

I remember when this movie came out, as soon as it would come on i'd pretend to slam the button like 10 times. It would have to be fast for me, if I thought about it i'd probably find myself in a little quandary.

I think a lot of people might say they would but it would obviously be totally different given the real life choice. It's like in firing squads when they give the one fake bullet out so everyone can tell themselves that they are the one that really didn't kill the person.

The box was a weird movie though. I want to like it but I don't completely, yet I can't find myself hating it and I put it on if I see it. I think cameron diaz kind of makes it hard to watch for me...can she just pick one accent?

that is a sexy looking girl in your pic.

The movie sucked. The Twilight Zone episode was badass. Anyone who doesn't immediately realize that you would be killing the last person who pressed the button, is a moron.

Interesting little philosophical question.. I probably wouldn't seeing as having money isn't as appealing to me as making money.

Though, little addendum: What would you do if your spouse was going to press the button? Would you go out of your way to save the nameless person, or would you let them die and take the million dollars?

No. Why would you want to kill someone?

Once again, why would you want to kill someone? Of course I'd stop them.

I would keep my mouth shut, no question.

There are some people in this world I really want to live and flourish.

There are Billions that I'm 100% OK with Offing. SRSLY.

However, if I can't pick which, I wouldn't push that button for 100 million... Might be one of the good folks.

How the hell can you want to kill BILLIONS of people without knowing them? SRSLY

The only justification for killing someone would be to stop them from killing an innocent person. Dexter.

Someone dies every few seconds, it fate has it that they're were going to die so be it.

I'd push the button.

[out before SUP3RNOVA guiltfest]

If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound? Well as long as I am not in the woods it didnt happen.

Since I'm not "Goober Gay" I know the difference between people living shitty lives and people living good lives. It'd be doing them a favor. SRSLY.
