Last year, Jason Fried and his crew at Basecamp launched The Distance.

It profiles private, non-tech businesses that have been around for 25 years or longer. That in itself is reason enough to check it out. While none of the businesses are sexy, they've managed to do enough things right to outlast their competition.

If you're under 40, you may be used to the idea of launching multiple businesses quickly with little to no real skin in the game. If they fail, you won't go hungry. You can quickly launch a few more, focusing on the ones that show the most potential and abandoning the others.

That wasn't possible 25 years ago. The stories posted on The Distance reflect that dynamic.

Another reason to check out the site: Fried and Co. are investing in long-form journalism with feature-quality storytelling. That's a breath of fresh air. As you can imagine, it's tough to pump out that type of content in volume. Hence, The Distance is publishing one story per month.

Fried's company has put out a lot of great content about entrepreneurship over the years. The Distance is some of the best I've seen.

This is good! I write about customer retention for offline businesses so I can basically turn everyone of these case studies into an article on my site.
