Terrible news; Google has now finally finished making the ever so predictable move of pushing all organic click through via https, disabling our ability to see keyword traffic sources via anything other than WMT.

This SEO game has just been made more difficult (and for me; fun)

Save those old logs yo; there be gold down yonder!

The ironic thing is that this will just mean people become more dependent on rank checkers and generally mass scraping Google. I'm now going to be having to load up a whole ton of long tail into rank trackers in addition to the shorter tail stuff I track for myself and clients.

It is only ironic if you think they are trying to thwart rank checking.

They are doing this for power. Information asymmetry FTW.

Hey man, any source for this news.
That sucks....

found one...http://searchengineland.com/post-prism-google-secure-searches-172487

when does this take effect? I'm still getting kw's in referring urls.

If publishers don’t somehow constantly archive these terms, they’re lost. But a change to Google AdWords in August allows publishers to store the terms as long as they like, for easy and instant access — as long as they use Google’s ad system.

It’s an odd situation that Google won’t archive search term data within the toolset it expressly built for non-advertisers — Google Webmaster Tools — but does allow this through its ad system. It suggests that terms have been withheld all along in part to create new Google advertisers.

Oh?

Postscript (5:05pm ET):

Google’s sent this update:

We want to provide SSL protection to as many users as we can, in as many regions as we can — we added non-signed-in Chrome omnibox searches earlier this year, and more recently other users who aren’t signed in. We’re going to continue expanding our use of SSL in our services because we believe it’s a good thing for users….

The motivation here is not to drive the ads side — it’s for our search users.

Oh... right.

Different people are seeing different %s getting through, but it is going down across the board. I'm up to a little under 80% being not-provided. I imagine it'll go up to close to 100 within the month or two.

Is the only reason this is being done is to push more people towards Adwords/Paid spend?

I'm pretty pissed, but I can't afford to get angry. When you get angry your brain releases an enzyme in your head that temporarily lowers your IQ. That's why when you see people go off, they can he heard sometimes saying "I'm so angry I can't think".

Here is my gift to the last remaining SEOers after today.

... The time has come... to release the KKraken...

You all should be in PPC, I could prob help a lot of you out

Seriously. There's a lot of money in PPC. And you never have to worry about algo changes. In fact, they just brings the clients running.

When you're an SEO, you hustle from month to month, hoping Big G leaves your hard work intact. When you manage PPC accounts, you put all the hard work in up front the first month, and then just keep tweaking here and there for a monthly retainer that never goes away. Want to improve your accounts? Want to try new Ad types? Call your google Rep and they'll actually look over your accounts with you, suggest new beta ad types, and generally try to help you acquire new clients.

Seriously. It's fucking incredible.

Best decision I ever made was getting out of SEO and into PPC. Paid traffic is never going away.

very sad - although my data has shown about 70% not provided for the past year across practically all of my sites.

Really surprised there hasn't been a tool released to "predict" or "decipher" not provided that has taken off.
