Check out this bullshit. In exchange for Ben Nelson being the 60th vote, they bribed him in by having the feds pay for a 100% expansion of Medicaid in Nebraska. Along with this gem:

"A proposed 0.5 percent increase in the Medicare payroll tax was bumped up to 0.9 percent in the latest version, putting the tax at 2.35 percent on income over $200,000 a year for individuals, $250,000 for couples."



It just keeps getting fucking better.

The government wants control , taxes are a way to control.

EVERY SINGLE TIME the government passes healthcare laws, the cost of it goes up. Our local hospital publishes financials every year, and at the moment they have to increase their fees by 30% for just ONE law forced on them by the good 'ol government.

Gotta love how these cowards need to vote on this bill at 1:30 in the morning on Christmas week because they KNOW 4 out of 5 people ARE happy with their healthcare. We don't fucking restructure 15% of our ENTIRE economy to make the unhappy 20% HAPPY, especially when our economy has been teetering as IS.

I cannot wait for Republican Landslide 2010. Democrats will fade out of power for a generation.

I support health reform, but I don't like this bill. I used to work in health insurance, and believe me, it is not consumer friendly. Consumers do need protection, and many people who want to buy health insurance cannot do it.

That said...I don't know what you conservatives are complaining about. Not knowing all the details, because nobody does, this bill seems like a gift to insurers - everybody is forced (strongly encouraged through fines) to get health insurancce, but I don't see how this helps them get it.

From what I heard, insurers must take children with pre-existing conditions, but there is no provision for adults until 2014. That should give plenty of people time to die of treatable diseases.

You guys are mostly young. You don't get it. Most of you will not arrive at 55 or 60 without some sort of health issue. Try buying insurance then.

in Canada, 40% of my income goes to taxes. Between my 9-5 & my affiliate revenue tens of thousands will go to the government this year.

It's always been that way in Canada though, but such is the price of a true public health care system. I've never seen or heard of a hospital bill.

it's a toss up, really - i suppose i like that Canadians have access to this system, but it's also super frustrating to think that i'd be making a lot more cash in the us. I'll never have kids, and probably use the health care system a lot less than what i'm paying for.

1) the average income in canada is significantly lower than the United States.

2) Canada's sliding scale for taxation increases dramatically as wages increase. Some canadians pay up to 55% income tax.

just because the average canadian individual pays less, we're very likely still paying a higher percentage of our income.

3) your reference was in US dollars. Our dollar fluctuates, but is almost always worth significantly less than USD.

Yes, and Bill Gates pays a lot more than $3,000 a year. In Canada, less of his tax money would be needed to pay for the health care of illegal immigrants, drug addicts, etc.

Even if true, you have to remember that you are paying for the majority of your coverage.

I understand, but I'm saying that it is mainly due to having higher across-the-board spending and not just from health care. The Canadian government spends around five times the amount that the USA does on "the arts", for one example.

I feel sorry for the folks who are retiring or who have coverage that their job pays for as a benefit, if every one has to take this health care junk then people will lose benefits based on that double coverage law and probably be forced to take lesser, even more expensive care. But broke folks won't feel a thing.

um, i'm in the US and my overall tax rate, including payroll taxes, is higher than 40%
