They dont allow VOIP over 3g because it bypasses the carriers call costs... its very obvious. Especially in the USA with unlimited data plans, thats a SHITLOAD of extremely cheap calls that could be made over 3g.

Unless you're running Prepaid (for how little it matters), there is no difference between using 3g and the cell network in term of price..you're still paying for X minutes per month. The only question is weather you will use those minutes. Still, the minimum plan you will get is $60+ per month (not sure on the 3g costs) with 450 minutes (I believe...). So unless you're being REALLY picky about your minute usage, it really doesn't make a difference.

I consider myself a heavy phone user (business, etc.), and I don't go anywhere near my 200 minutes a month (unlocked, running ATT PYP), and I don't use VOIP. This phone is the only one I ever use to talk to people. Unless you KNOW you are going over your monthly balance...VOIP doesn't mean anything.

That's not heavy phone use at all and VOIP is incredibly useful when you regularly have to call international. Until recently I was using 2000+ domestic minutes per month.

I've now brought that to below 400 peak usage through careful timing and heavy Skype Unlimited usage ($100 per year for unlimited international and domestic) and I use Skype To Go to use Skype for international calls from my iphone.

Thank you, someone not brainwashed by Apple marketing. What makes everyone think the iPhone was so great anyway? The shiny case and cute apple logo? Must have been the touch screen interface.... Never did it bring the latest and greatest of the phone hardware. Camera = Shit, GPS and 3g have been around for well over a year(seriously), and the applications are just now being opened up.

Wait for Android or check out a Nokia E90, I promised you won't be disappointed.

Bullshit. I can Voip with my Nokia and I use AT&T.
 
If size is a factor, John, get the Diamond.

If you've got pants that can fit a small novel in the pockets, then think about getting the Shift or the Advantage. They're basically UMPCs that will let you make a phone call. Just make sure you've got headphones for them, because holding up something that's A5 sized to your head to talk to someone is just asking for weird looks.

I'm not some damn fanboy of HTC or O2 or Dopod (they're actually all the same device, just with different software packages and colours) or Windows Mobile. They certainly have their own problems, but the devices themselves are fantasticly powerful.
So it amazes me at how people buy into the iPhone, especially when they already own iPods.
the iPhone is an inferior device in every single way except that it's idiot proofed. It basically provides PDA functions for people that really have no need of a PDA, and the iPhone2 also just happens to make sure they don't get lost.
You can tilt it to change orientation? So fucking what? is it so much harder to press an assigned button that does the same thing on an XDA-IIs, which is now 5 years old but still more powerful (with the only exception of the lacking GPS)?
