The only North Korean to escape from prison camp

Dozens have escaped.

Trash journalism ftw.

Yes, however he is the only person born inside a camp to escape, he had no knowledge of the outside world hence why its much more of an achivement. Homeboy didnt even know the world was round untill he was in his 21!

Have read the book and its amazing BTW.

Prisoners go to desperate lengths for food: eating rats or eating their own vomit to alleviate hunger. “Everything we ate was horrendous,” says Shin. “But the worst thing was corn kernels picked out of cow dung.”

This. Is. Fucked. Up.

Its sad to think of people suffering like this guy had to.

This part of the article made me squirm:

Park was electrocuted during the escape as he squeezed through the electric fence. Shin suffered only burns, a small price after years of torture. His body bears many scars — his finger was chopped off by guards who also stuck a hook through his stomach and suspended him over a fire.

Reminds me of the torture scene from the latest Sherlock Holmes movie (but it was his shoulder there - stomach would be much worse IMO).

There is some torture in it but whole book isnt depressing. For a start its an amazing insight into North Korea and its workings, all we ever hear on the news is about nuclear weapons (or attempted nuclear weapons), but these camps do exist which is amazing given it is 2012. Plus this guys determination and eventual escape puts my "bitching" about "Penguin" update into perspective.

Book recommended FTW

the british consulate has a yearly post in pyongyang if anyone got really fucked by penguin and needs a day job.
