The Truth About "Assault Weapons"

What is the difference in price between an assault rifle and a handgun? (which im assuming is the main tool of gun murder).
It mentions that only 2% of gun murders are committed using an assault rifle yet surely handguns are far more common and inexpensive than assault rifles? The argument seems to be pushing us towards believing that assault rifles are of far less menace of handguns yet I imagine if the price and abundance of assault rifles and handguns were swapped, it would most likely be the other way round? (Not completely though because it's much easier to conceal a handgun).
I'm not making the argument of whether they should be banned or not, I just feel like the argumentative style was a little ... manipulative.

Rifles are more abundant than handguns.
Handguns make up about 25% of all firearm ownership in the US , Long guns (including semi auto rifles) accounts for around 42% of all firearm ownership.
Shotguns are in the same category , ownership is similar or higher than handguns, yet also account for amazingly few murders in the US (About 350/yr versus 325/yr for rifles).

The truth is, the way things stand now, any one of us could be murdered anytime, almost anywhere by a maniac with an assault weapon spraying bullets. In movie theater, in school, at the mall while shopping for underwear.
I guess we need to accept mass slaughter on a regular basis as the price of freedom. I see a market for designer bullet-proof vests for children and adults. Anybody promoting in this niche?

Yes, we could and so what? It's clear the right to buy any kind of weapon is a god-given American right that is far more important than public safety. I would give my life to ensure that the mentally ill and felons have the right to buy assault weapons. Wouldn't you? This is the American way.

You're right. Death by lightning is a tragedy. A schoolroom full of murdered children is just collateral damage. Our freedom to pack heat is more important than the right to live.
Yep, because that is exactly what is going on. There is a 1 to 1 relationship with freedom to gun deaths. And gun rights means the right to sell to crazies and felons. And banning guns would end all gun related violence and mass murders, ensuring public safety (minus the 50 other things that cause more deaths than guns). You've nailed it.

Is there a charity to help the mentally ill buy guns? We should all pitch in and help them exercise their right to aim loaded weapons at us.

No but there should be some kind of social services as a preventative measure for this. At risk children need to be protected from mentally ill mothers, even if in some rare cases that means taking them away (although this should be a last resort).
You're probably talking about the type of mental illnesses that can get people committed to institutions. I don't think the pregnancy rate is very high among those people and current US laws about child endangerment could probably be applied to them, just like there are current laws in regards to those people and firearms.
When the CDC mentions mothers with a "history of mental illness", that probably includes depression, ADD, bipolar, and whatever else - which are things that a large percent of the US population now gets diagnosed with.
Why do you keep spewing the words "assault weapon"? Did you not look at the link I posted? Do you not understand that the difference between a "black gun" and almost all others sold is purely cosmetic?
