The US govt stole my parents laptop

Apparently, US customs took the laptop at the border, and will return it after investigation. I'm a little dumbfounded -- this is my parents. They're retired, wealthy, lived very "straight arrowed" lives, and there's absolutely nothing in their lives that would cause red flags.

Some US immigration official decided otherwise I guess. Christ, they're just going to Arizona to drink some beers and play some cards with other Canadian friends they know who live there 6 months/year.

What the fuck has the US turned into? Really? My parents laptop is a national security concern?
 


This is crazy.

It's also the reason why I always stick my laptop up my ass whenever I'm entering or leaving the US. (one of the reasons, anyway)

United States customs don't fuck around.

1. They are old, what are they doing with a laptop.

2. Retired, Wealthy, and going to mexico.


And the most important reason, they wanted that laptop to play flappy bird.
 
The laptop will be imaged (copied) and possibly compromised (malware, keylogger). Wipe the drive and sell it on ebay.



EDIT: I would never sell a wiped drive on ebay.
 
I have to remember to encrypt a 10gb volume with a suspicious sounding file name next time I travel abroad. All the hard work they'll put in to it, just to be dick roll'd.
 
They bashed the shit out of my camera that had some photos on it that they obviously didn't like after a trip to the south islands

Bashed my laptop about a month ago

Atleast they might get it back...
 
They are just keeping us safe guys, just do what they say and dont question it.
 
Only thing I can think of is they lived in Malaysia for a few years. So maybe some retarded 23 year old immigration official with an IQ of 50 scanned their passports, seen the Malaysian VISAs popup, and due to the missing flight decided to confiscate the laptop.

That's really the only thing I can think of. Unless my dad has gotten bored during his retirement, and found himself some new hobbies. :)

Well fuck, my dad was posted there years ago by ExxonMobil to help organize / clean up some offshore rigs. Hardly anything to do with a missing plane today.

Did you keep the smashed camera? There is a strong possibility to recover photos.

If anyone ever is in a sticky spot with their camera, offer to delete photos. After deleting remove card, do not take another photo on that card. Any number of data recovery programs should easily recover the images
