Basically there are prisons in Norway that are more like vacation spots than traditional prisons. The thought is that by reintegrating the prisoners with society as much as they can, it'll be easier for them to transition back in to society once they are released. Seems to work well as the 3 year relapse is about 16% where in the US our relapse percentage is around 40% at least, while other studies say it's more like 50%.

Go Norway.

Welcome to the world's nicest prison - CNN.com

Norway also has extremely limited maximum sentences. Maximum life sentence is 21 years, though most are "out" between 7-14.

In the US you are fucked with a criminal record where there is less government assstance unlike a more social welfare state like Norway

You'd know more about Europe but your ignorance of soccer has apparently cast a ripple of ignorance in the abyss that is reason

"We should reduce the risk of reoffending, because if we don't, what's the point of punishment, except for leaning toward the primitive side of humanity?"
I wish most people in law enforcement and corrections were this rational.

Rage9 didn't display any ignorance that I could see in the OP. If your post was a troll, it was poor, than_west. Go on, call me a name, that'll change everything.

You're a faggot.

I think we should legalize ridiculous drugs like weed and ticket harsher ones. You can penalize CRIMES relating drugs but remove or Lower the penalties for drug USERS. We are crowding the prisons and mixing TRUE criminals with regular people with addictions.

If you put a flower next to a turd, and drop them in the toilet. The flower is going to smell like shit, not the other way around. Dropping these non criminal addicts in with real criminals is potentially contaminating (for lack of a better word) the addict and making him now a potential criminal.

He is going to learn criminal behaviors that he would of not other wise had, paying penalties on the streets. (PAYING penalties...see, the government can still make their money)

I think prisons should have levels. Your behavior on those levels dictate whether you go up or down a level. I think everyone should have to exit through a place like that before they are even eligible for parole.

You can have decent, boot camp like prisons that you go to for first time convictions. It should be strict, zero tolerance. You fuck up, you go to the shitty prison with no freedoms and counseling sessions. Explain that they will never leave this place until they successfully graduate back to boot camp.

People at boot camp, attend regular group meetings and counseling sessions. They attend schools and get GED's. After graduating here, they go to a fee but closed society with again, zero tolerance. If you fuck up, you start over at boot camp.

Once living and gaining skills in the Free society, you parole out to the free world. This teaching of consequences yet rehabilitation of ACTUAL criminals...would solve a lot of problem IMO.

I hope that prison is for norwegians only. Muhammedan immigrants should get the choice of sharia punishment or being expelled+banned.

Fun Fact: Every rape committed in Oslo last year was by immigrants. Every. Rape.

That is exactly how prisons already operate.

They have most of that shit already too, depending on the crime.

The biggest problem here is we lock up people for weak ass crimes, and we keep a ton of prisoners past their outdate due to minor behavioral issues. I can't tell you how many people I saw get "flopped" (parole board makes them stay an extra year or more past their outdate) just because they got caught using a microwave in a different unit or caught with minor contraband.

So the parole board decides to keep a guy locked up for an extra year or two or three for minor bullshit, costing taxpayers $40k-$50k per year and making that inmate less and less employable the longer he stays locked up.

It's mostly done for political reasons. In many states you have prisons being the #1 in employer in some backwoods part of the state, so to keep those jobs there they have to keep the prisons full. You can literally watch as crime rates go down, more prisoners are kept past their outdate, and as crime rates go up, more prisoners are let go on their outdate. It's an evil ass numbers game.

Prisons are also private and for-profit. They lobby for harsher laws to fill the prisons with more people so they get paid more. Huge problem.
