That could be good or bad depending on what your needs are.

I guess it's good if you need your workforce flooded with cheap labor that depresses the average wage

Or you need more people who can't pay for healthcare

Or if you feel that there's not enough crime or enjoy a good shootout with drug smugglers

Or you want the school system overwhelmed with kids whos parents don't pay taxes.

My point being that, if Minnesota had half the burden , caused by illegals, that Texas does, the stats given by aim would be drastically different.

(Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Mexico and have nothing but respect for the average Mexican, I've been there many times and have met a lot of great people.)

This will start a big political debate on immigration policies, I just know it. Yes, those things suck and if you think they are affecting only Texas, you're jaded. I was in Minneapolis just last week and I believe it was their one week of summer - beautiful, the weather was perfect. I just despise that place any time after October.

Of course those aren't problems that only affect Texas, but in a "My state's better than yours" thread you need to take those into consideration. (BTW, I don't live in Texas)

And yes, I am jaded, but I don't think you used it correctly

jaded
adjective
  1. wear out, Worn out, wearied, or lacking enthusiasm; exhausted.
  2. Cynically insensitive; made callous by experience.
Yep, definition 2 is me.

We have a vastly different problem to deal with: Canadian Illegals. The cross the border in search of quality health care, as their government run universal health care system has taxed them broke and left millions of people on waiting lists. ;-)

In all seriousness though, I don't think sharing a border with Mexico is the problem. Look at D.C., which is worse than Texas on almost all accounts.

Also, we have large immigrant populations here as well. We're the #2 home for Hmong folks (second only to California) and we're the #1 destination for Somalians as well. Somalians are everywhere. A local newspaper even did a piece a few years ago called The Mall of Somalia.

I don't know what it's like in Houston, or really what it's like living in Texas, but whoever decorated that house must be schizophrenic - nice work on the furnishings lol....a house like that would cost at least 500k here in Toronto....minus the warm weather ;)

Is it really that bad way down south?

While Houston is not experiencing an economic slowdown to the demand in oil, it does often have the highest crime rates, the fattest populations and the least educated levels compared with other large cities.

Haven't visited myself, but the people who I've met that lived there say it's great if you like large mosquitoes, brutal humid temps and lots of smog and pollution.

I agree that it's a nationwide problem, I've been to construction sites in Maine where it took me several minutes to find someone who spoke English.

But it gets worse the closer you get to the border, and the illegals closer to the border tend to be more of a burden because so many cross over just to get freebies like health care, welfare, and schooling.

And the crime along the border is out of control, you just don't see it covered on the news unless you live near the border. It amazes me how silent the media is when it comes to the crime along the border.

I used to love to visit border towns like Laredo and Juarez but I wouldn't go there now if you paid me.

I'd also say that a majority of the Hmong and Somalis have emigrated legally (I could be wrong on that though)

And you can't compare DC (Liberal politics on display) to any state, you'd have to compare it city to city. Besides, all of the politicians skew the crime stats (especially if you consider being idiots a crime ;) )

immigration is not the problem. ILLEGAL immigration is....

Life is around 99.9% on the internet now anyway. As long as I don't live in a place where I'm likely to be killed just for living there ( and all the normal places to go are within reasonable distance), I dont care where I live. I enjoy taking advantage of local (non) economies and living in a cheap ass house.

When it comes down to it, most people live in certain places because of the availabiliy and proximity to jobs. Who the fuck needs "jobs"?
