Shame to not mention some of the classics:

Straight Outta Compton - NWA
It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
Ill Communication - Beastie Boys (Paul's Boutique is genius, but it's so far ranging that it shouldn't be solidly classified as hip hop).

Surprised The Chronic only made honorable mention.

Not a bad list. Although I've never liked Outkast / Tribe Called Quest. Personal preference I guess. A few comments...

I think BlackStar was just as good as Black on Both Sides.

Game Theory is better (IMO) than Philedelphia Half-life

Where's Jay? He's not even in honorable mentions?

Thanks for the Digable Planets. Holy crap what a cool vibe. Why didn't they make more albums? :/

I don't know if I could put them in order - shit just coming up with a top 10 is difficult enough, but here goes (in no particular order):

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Million to Hold Us Back
Eric B & Rakim - Follow The Leader
Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
EPMD - Strictly Business
BDP - By All Means Necessary
GZA - Liquid Swords
Wu Tang - 36 Chambers
Nas - Illmatic
Esham - Closed Casket
Ice T - Rhyme Pays

Honorable Mentions:

Almost everything else by any of the above, plus
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Snoop - Doggystyle
Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP
Easy E - Eazy Does It
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Geto Boys - Geto Boys

Fuck I could go on, but we see a pattern here...

I'm glad someone finally mentioned Jay. I'm picking a fight but fuck it, Jay > Nas. :)

Here's an off the cuff top 10 (in no particular order):
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
2pac - Me Against The World
Notorious BIG - Ready To Die
Common - Resurrection
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - Atliens
Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Here's some other great albums that deserve mention... maybe not the caliber of the albums above but I'd say they're personal classics at the very least and a few are post 2000.

Reflection Eternal - Train Of Thought
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions
2pac - Makaveli
Big L - Lifestyles of the poor and dangerous
ODB - Nigga Please (this album was genius, don't deny it)
Too Short - Gettin' It
Scarface - Last Of A Dying Breed
Atmosphere - Lucy Ford
Brother Ali - Shadows on the sun
Cunninlynguists - A Piece Of Strange
Big Pun - Capital Punishment
Mos Def and Talib Kweli - Blackstar
Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
Masta Ace - Disposable Arts

I can't believe so many affiliate marketers like classic/underground hip-hop, and actually like good hip-hop. Major props to a lot of the videos being posted so far.

c'mon now, no way lifestylez of da poor and dangerous isn't top 10. chronic 2001 too for sheer production value. while y'all gettin gassed up on some of this crap, no mention of the 18th letter, capital punishment, the giancana story or only built 4 cuban linx? even go real mainstream and go with all eyez on me or maybe blackout. both were so hot when they dropped. liquid swords is def top 10.

it's so hard to just pick 10 albums... can't believe no mention of kane, g rap, big l, big pun, gangstarr, or jada.. jay gettin no love either... all these guys have released gems, classics from start to finish. just some thoughts off the top.

ah there we go.. was too slow i guess.

***You will note that there is nothing on this list post-2000 because. . .well, because since MTV's stranglehold on the genre eviscerated the last breaths of the true art form, everything SUCKS. This is an inarguable fact, and if you disagree then you were schooled by somebody that didn't know what they were talking about, or simply don't have ears for art - you prefer bullshit instead.***

dude please tell me this is a fuckin joke. this is some close minded, ridiculous bullshit - LOL @ "inarguable fact." what does seem to be a fact is that somehow you are confusing what gets regular rotation on MTV and mainstream radio with the genre as a whole. yes, in general, imo rap has gone way downhill since the 90s.. but saying everything sucks after 2000? wtf are you talking about. you must have water on the brain.

alright 3 post-2000 albums that shit on half the faggy ass digable planet bullshit you're hyping:

-Kool G Rap - The Giancana Story
-Gang Starr - The Ownerz
-Wu-Tang Clan - Iron Flag (i know a lot of people aint feelin it but personally i loved it)

in conclusion, eat a fat dick OP and drop a lil 16 or 32 of you proving you're "EvanCPC the Real eMCee" or stfu. trying to talk smack on bobby hustle is 100% worthless. people have at least heard some of his and mine rhymes, love us or hate us we're jumping off this AM rap genre.

respect is earned, you don't get it just by some lame call out thread. fuck with ppc.bz and end up in triage, beeyotch.

GET MONEY GET PAID

I know I am new here...... and I have only been here for 6 minutes and this is the first thread i read. But OMG, the reason there is no new music on this post is because you stole a forum thread from 10 years ago hxxp://www.nwtekno.org/printthread.php?threadid=42026&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

I find it crazy that you started a thread to talk about *your* favorite music which is a time to reflect on what you like in life.....and here you are jacking a 10 year old post!!!! How unoriginal. Awesomeness!!:zzwhip:

LMAO!! HAHA this is just too good.. pwn3ed by strid3r. this thread is such a total and utter fail. OP eat a fat dick... HAHAHAHA. from the other thread:

'Progress' in HH
This is an issue that has been grappled with for some time now in hip hop. A lot of artists have given up on the ideal of progress, choosing simply to remain complacent with dishing out the same sounds, beats and lyrics that have 'bumped' for years. Take anything you hear on MTV or the radio, and it's evident that there has not been a notable mainstream evolution is some time.

Fortunately, hip hop has diversified to the point of near-unrecognizabilty. True Hip Hop, specifically. Artists that take chances, that break the mold - not for the sake of doing so, but with a specific intention, that to create art - keep the movement alive, and that is what progress is about.

I feel that the direction of hip hop as of late is one definitely geared toward progress, substantially in a more 'acceptant' or inclusive capacity. Lyricists are separated from rappers, and include tomes on philosophy, depth, sensitivity and abstraction. Vast Aire, Aesop Rock, J-Live, Sole...these are examples of current lyricists that are not afraid to push the limits of mental contemplation and integration within the genre.

And kudos to Mos Def, Common, the Roots and Outkast for bringing a different element of this progress to the hip hop masses. These artists have developed a fusion of live instrumentation, melody and heart, evident in the emotion conveyed throughout their respective albums.

Bottom line - progress is the breaking down of barriers, and opening the eyes, minds and hearts of an audience or fanbase.

straight from OP's mouth back in 8/02. man from the looks of it you were feeling the "progress" in the mainstream back then.. what happened.. you hear one too many big tymers' singles that summer? (remember summer 02 was their summer, even tho they shine every summer)

this is too good. care to recycle any more old threads of yours? maybe a nice little rant on how no good action flicks have come out post die hard with a vengeance, and that the genre has been bastardized by the likes of the transporter? make sure to include a nice lil disclaimer about how anyone who disagrees with you doesn't "have ears for art" and "prefers bullshit instead."

props to strider the internet gumshoe

The only cds of this style I've owned in my adult life are doggystyle & black sunday ... hightimes might have had something to do with that though.

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

^^ this is BY FAR the best cd in this entire thread. Egg Man FTW
