Town requires gun ownership, no murders in 25 years

^^That's probably because they used firearm registration records to round up all the guns from their owners and then destroyed them.

I'm not taking sides here but it seems that a LARGE portion of this is being unexamined. I don't think we're hearing the whole story.

They say "gun ownership is mandatory". It's mandatory or what? You have to leave and live somewhere else? If that is the case then ANY person convicted of a crime will not be able to live there. Since recidivism is huge we could assume that since they do not allow prior criminals to live there their crime is much lower.

The stats need further investigating before anyone draws any conclusions.

Mind elaborating? I can't watch the video since I'm currently on ridiculously slow internet. Should probably mention as well, that over here, there's two types of gun license: Firearms licenses, and shotgun licenses. Shotgun licenses are fairly easy to get, whereas firearms licenses are a bit more difficult, although still obtainable. (except for handguns, which are banned.

Also, the video title refers to Great Britain, yet refers to England in the description? Which one is it, because in Northern Ireland for example, it's legal to own a handgun, while here, it's not.

I've lived in and around Kennesaw nearly my whole life.

Kennesaw is not a 'small town'

Kennesaw is a suburb of Atlanta which is growing. (I see stats have already been cited)

The majority of crime in Atlanta is on the south and south west side of town - inside the 285 perimeter highway.

And yes if you pulled the stats on the ethnicities of those areas you'd probably not be surprised.

It's England, and it has a bit about Australia's ban as well.

In your response to amateursurgeon's post about the increase in firearms-related crime following the handgun ban you mention that most of the weapons are shotguns. I don't know the facts on that part, so assuming you know what you are talking about: it appears that you are making the argument that because shotguns are still relatively easy to get a license for, therefore they show up more in criminal usage.

I offer as an alternate explanation that the destruction of the majority of handguns and many other long guns (the video shows several being sawed in half) leaves mostly shotguns with which to use in criminal activities.

As to the video, it shows several Englishmen and women lamenting the fact they didn't do more to oppose the ban, and also includes the open public march in protest just preceding its implementation. Another segment speaks with one female Olympic pistol shooter, even, who commented on how ridiculous it is for her to compete under the British flag while having to actually practice her sport in another country.

The racial makeup of the city was 81.97% White, 1.90% Black, 5.22% Native American, 2.91% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.54% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races.

Only 1.9% black...

/justsaying

The racial makeup of the village was 73.97% White, 0.63% African American, 0.12% Native American, 22.18% Asian, 1.16% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.40% of the population

Only 0.63% black...

Agreed, there are likely more shotguns than other guns for a combination of those two reasons (although it should be noted, antique guns can be licensed moderately easily too, I believe. You don't need a license at all if you have them modified so they won't fire. Muzzle loading pistols can be licensed too.) However, overall gun usage in crimes (assuming you don't count people with airsoft pistols pretending they're real, lol) is pretty low. It'd be pretty difficult to hide a shotgun on your person.

Obviously there are people who are against it, as you can find with any new law. I doubt the NRA chose a random selection of people to interview, and then included all of those people in that video. I agree that it's ridiculous about the Olympic pistol shooting (I think it should be able to be done at licensed clubs, as with other forms of firearm), however, she'd still be able to train in Britain, under the British flag, since Northern Ireland allow you to be licensed to own handguns.

There's an interesting paper on it here:

http://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/opus713/ccjs_gun_crime_report.pdf

I haven't read through it all, but it looks like the major "crimes" in UK are committed with Air Guns & Imitation Firearms. Other things I picked up:

Handgun crimes have increased rapidly over the past few years, after falling subsequent to the ban.

It seems pretty clear that legal gun ownership increases the number of suicides with firearms. That's kind of a different issue though.

well it's pretty easy to present data like that when theb population is largely middle class and wealthy

it's legal in the UK to own firearms if you can gert a license, licnese is granted for people in the countryside who have to deal with foxes, are farmers or some other caluses.

You will never see farmers going round robbing each other or doing a drive by.

If you make it a law for everyone in chicago to own a gun and to carry one in their possession I bet you will come into a lot of problems.

I just gave my daughter a S&W 40, she went out and got a carry permit in Washington State while she goes to college. She received a ribbon for shooting the pistol in the Navy. I don't give a shit about stats, you can either pull a gun to defend yourself in 3 seconds from someone that doesn't give a rats ass about your life, or you can wait 15 minutes for the police.
Most people that are against guns have never shot one. But they keep passing gun laws that only effect those that follow the law.
Congrats to Kennesaw for standing up to the liberals that want to disarm legal ownership

I bet you don't. (see i can make theoretical guesses too!)
