Ubuntu or Win 7?

Just picked up a new Dell laptop today, and it came pre-installed with Ubuntu. Was just going to immediately throw Win 7 on, but missed the boot options, so it loaded up Ubuntu on me.

The Ubuntu team must have been hard at work over the past several years, because I have to admit, it seems like a pretty slick OS. Although I'm already use to Win 7, and like it, so not sure if I want to screw around with a new OS. Any recommendations? Ubuntu or Win 7?

Use whatever helps you get your work done the easiest
 
Ubuntu is pretty, sleek, user friendly all that, but in terms of overall productivity you'll have a smoother time on Windows.
 
Not a fan of Unity on Ubuntu, but I really prefer linux for dev. Two tools prevent me from being a linux user full time, Photoshop - I have to keep up with the versions, and Unity.

If you don't need anything that only runs on Windows, why not go linux? Posix ftw.

I suppose that's the one real positive of OSX, linux-like power with Windows level app selection (aside from games).

I know, that's what has me intrigued about it. scp and rsync shit around like crazy from my laptop, and oh so much more.

Cron job -> Dropbox API for automated backups of docs, etc.
 
Either or, though personally I prefer Windows 8 to 7. I plan on using Linux on the next laptop I buy (thinkpad). These days my workflow is pretty much the same no matter what OS I use. The shortcuts change from time to time, but that's about it.
 
always win7 it gets the job done reliably! win8 is bullshit tried this weekend on my laptop and went back to win7.
 
Windows 7/8 is the way to go. For 90% of people who switch to Ubuntu it will somehow manage to get in the way of an extremely simple task.
 
Have an old desktop running ubuntu. Haven't shut that machine off in 5 years -- uses 1/4 of the RAM that win7 uses. Still super fast. Never have to worry about spyware,viruses. Incredible library of software that can get to with a simple search. Also use open office for wordprocessing/excel

but like UG said -- there are some things you need win7 for (just can't think of any off the top)............ubot? netflix instant?
 
I didnt like unity on ubuntu so I went with xubuntu. Xubuntu uses xfce which I find simple and sleek. Ubuntu/Xubuntu offers live startup iso's so you can boot into them and play around, see if you like them.
Like the other said, it really depends on your use. If you need photoshop, quickbooks etc... you should stick with win7.
 
I have been using Linux for a very long time.

Linux Mint is better than Ubuntu. It's faster. In my opinion it also looks better if you download Cinnamon or Mate (Linux Mint let's you decide..and you can always download them later)

If you do get Linux Mint I recommend the LMDE flavor so you can have rolling upgrades.

Think rolling upgrades like installing Windows XP in 2000 and you just upgrade your files once in a while and years later you are running 8.1 and you never really had to do a full re-install. Obviously at some point you will upgrade your hardware but you get the idea.

Personally I use Arch Linux, it's more bleeding edge but it has kinks that if you are not familiar with Linux they can get annoying.

Having said that if you find yourself battling your OS instead of doing the work you need, the OS is useless to you.

It took me a long ass time to realize that and it came to me when I was stuck with a stupid DNS issue on a web server I was using on Liquidweb because I opted out the manager server services.

I had spent 2 days trying to fix an issue that I could have paid $10 extra a month (if that) to get it fixed within a few hours of their time not mine.

So if for some reason I get stuck with Linux I will just use the best tool I have at that moment...even if it's my work laptop with a corporate windows image.

That's my $0.02
