Ubuntu or Windows 8

And whats the reason behind that?
A lot of people don't like Unity or Gnome3 and think that the UI is unusable or made with tablets in mind. Sounds familiar when I think about it actually. Linux Mint is basically Ubuntu without some of the crud (depending on how you look at it) tacked on. They include more proprietary software (mostly plugins and codecs) with the distro so you don't have to download them, and they have their own version of Gnome Shell called Cinnamon and they also forked Gnome 2 and called it MATE. It's not bad actually.

I had to upgrade a Ubuntu webserver at work last week. Went ok, except that it asked about 50 times what I wanted to do with some menu.lst file that had changed. The same dialog every time, with 20 seconds in between. Also, nothing internet-related worked after the installation. Turns out I manually had to start the network manager service.

Needless to say, I was happy to return to my Windows station afterwards.

Ubuntu isn't ideal for servers. CentOS much better. Also, if you need a UI administer a web server, use Windows, or better still, learn to get it done with SSH + Vim. People who need GUIs and "upgrades" really shouldn't be running Internet-facing servers, you're just asking to get rooted.

Like said about, many people do not like unity. I hated it, it made tasks slower. Better options for a ubuntu setup. Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint. (I personally run Xubuntu)

I agree that CentOS is much better, I have it on my own webserver. This Ubuntu webserver at work is used for serving the internal knowledge base and some testing with MySQL. It's not open to the rest of the world.

Have you ever had to work with a windows server? ...

At work, all the time, yes. One of my jobs is working as a domain administrator. Windows Server 2008 R2 works great imo.

Been using Ubuntu as my primary OS for 6 months now, don't plan on going back anytime soon.

It's great to know that 100% of what I do here will work on my servers no matter what it is, and less bloat.

But hey, it's all about personal preference. Depends on what works best for you.

...people still run their own web servers?

I was referring to my hybrid server at WiredTree. CentOS is their default OS.

At work, the choice between having our own webserver or getting one from a host was easy. We have a few big physical servers that run all of our servers virtually, so setting up an extra virtual machine costs nothing. And most of the data on that knowledge base is confidential, so we prefer to keep it in house.

Let's not make this into another Linux v/s Window's thread, use what you are comfortable with. If you are not comfortable with Windows 8 stick with Win 7 or wait Windows Blue to come out may be in 2014.

Before the Windows 8 controversy I never knew that anyone ever used the start menu. Seems extremely inefficient. Maybe the first time to create a short cut for the desk top or my preference object dock. It's been months since I've opened the start menu.
