I'm using PayPal to process payments for a site and I want to upsell another product with it, so I set up the page but PayPal doesn't auto redirect after checkout so most people don't click the "click here to return to www.asdf.com" link, and they never see it.

What would be the best way to approach this? I have quite a few products on the page so I'm trying to avoid adding a bunch of extra bundle deals and things like that that would make it too overwhelming.

try upselling before you send them to paypal. If they are at checkout, suggest items there, before they go to paypal. If you try to do it after they already pay, chances are they really won't want to go through the process all over again. make it easy for them

when you go grocery shopping, all the impulse buy stuff is right there at the cash register, waiting for you to just add it to your cart before you pay right?

Won't adding another step before checkout for them to add in the extra items decrease the number of people who end up buying? Right now they click the Buy button and it goes to PayPal, if I were to add in another page in between I'm thinking the number of people who go through with the entire process would drop.

if you have a shitty upsell then maybe. It's a 1 second decision.

"Do you want the videos too for an extra $19?"
Yes (give me videos) - No (just the manual please)

This depends entirely on your product. For most things having the upsell before the purchase will get the best results. Some niche (namely MMO and ebooks) make almost all their money off those downsells after purchase from their receipt pages. What you need to make it happen is a payment processor who keeps the credit card preauthorized from the initial purchase, as if the customer needs to go through the entire checkout process again they'll lose the impulse. Not all processors do this. Clickbank does/did it.

PayPal I doubt you'll have any success with it, as you'll have that page where the receipt is on their site and there's an extra click back to your site so any momentum is lost.
