US bank account for non US residents? Is it possible ?

Anyone have any suggestions on this ?
I`m not a US resident and I want to open up a US bank account to receive commissions from Amazon.
Getting checks from them is a hustle and it takes forever ...
Some people say that CitiBank offers such a service but I`m not sure if it really is possible.
Anyone have any experience with this ?

Yes, it is possible. I search Google for more info, and here is what I found:
The answer to your question is Yes, non-residents of the US can indeed
open a US-based bank account, with online access to the accounts,
credit cards, and so on. It's not an easy process, but it is
possible.

There is no online procedure for doing this at Citibank. They will
need to receive from you -- via the mail -- copies of a number of key
documents -- an application form, 2 forms of identification (at least
one with a photo), information about your in-country bank, and so on.

There are minimum deposit requirements as well, but these vary
depending on the type of account and the types of services you need.


To get the process started, you should call Citibank's International
Personal Banking (IPB) group at:


1-813-604-3000


They will send you a complete package of information on starting up an IPB account.


From outside the US, this will be an international call, and will
require you to use the proper dialing codes from your country.

By the way, when I called the IPB (at their US-based toll-free
number), it was not easy to get past the automated menu to a live
operator. If you run into that problem with your call, try pressing
"O" or "*" to get through to a real human being.

Which country are you from? Citibank have offices in lots of countries, and offer USD accounts. Same with Lloyds TSB, and HSBC too (although HSBC's staff seem to have no idea what they're talking about)

I`m from Romania. Looked at HSBC and they dont have an office here. Do they really need to have an office here? Can`t everything be done on the phone/email/fax ?
Will call CitiBank tomorrow ...see what they have to say about it.
 
I have a payoneer us bank account and do work from Croatia. It's a virtual us bank account offered to those who have existing transaction history connected to them, like three payments or so. Price is $20 per year. I don't know if there is any difference from the real account though since you can do all the usual stuff like wire transfer, checks and so on.
 
From Canada it is easy... I just went across the border to Bank Of America and opened a Corporate account for the business and one for personal. Not sure if they let you apply by mail or online but no questions asked in person.
