I have an idea for a new site which is relatively simple, but I need a CMS that will be able to handle things if the site works out and I get the traffic I think the idea could pull in.

Basically, the core of the site would simply be subject lines, and comments. I post a topic, users talk about it. I'd like extra things like polls and surveys, user registrations, etc. None of this is way out there or crazy. I'm just looking for the best solution for what I want.

Should I use Wordpress? How well (with the right plugins) could it handle a huge traffic load? Should I consider programming my own CMS?

Wordpress can handle high traffic loads good with caching (if youre going to see spikes i mean) + a nicely equipped server. There are many sites running Wordpress pushing millions of uniques per month (see TechCrunch as a popular example).

I love running Joomla with themes from yootheme.com, but I'd say what your going for would be best suited for wordpress.

wordpress works wonders for a cms. install it and play with it.

run the wp-cache plugin and it should be seamless with high traffic.

For a designer, like you are, Textpattern - because you design the design and add the cms to it - not the other way around :)

Thanks for throwing the related links up for us but here is a direct link to one their sites Business 360: Get to grips with the issues affecting world business - Blogs from CNN.com

If you want to see some great WP sites being run by major corporations might we suggest you all visit the WP showcase. I go there to get ideas from time to time. He also knows Ford runs a wordpress site that is really hot too. Edit: Voila ! http://autoshows.ford.com/

Hadn't been on in a few busy revving up designs and campaigns for the next few holidays. Laterz
