What do you tell your friends and family?

thread would be right at home on warriorforums.

you're not a gangster, you do internet marketing.

who you portray yourself to be in your mind:

what you actually do:

As any urban youth today would say, please "don't get it twisted".

I don't tell my family anything, isn't anyone's business but mine. They just know I do business software, and leave it at that.

One thing to point out, is it isn't necessarily family you worry about. It's the company your family keeps. Family is always proud when they think someone in their family is successful and they like to talk about that person to everyone.

Problem is, everyone has family members who hang out with bad people who get jealous and will do anything from reporting you to the IRS, to robbing your house. This actually happened to my father before I was born. He had a good job at the time, my aunt tells some of her shady friends how well her brother-in-law is doing, and her friends ambush him one night when he's taking out the trash. She had no idea her friends would do that, she just thought she was saying nice things about her brother-in-law.

That was just for having a full-time job as a mechanic, and working a lot of overtime. Not even rich or privileged. Just a few good paychecks is enough to motivate people to come rob you at gunpoint in your own home.

After a long time of not making much money, I was seen as the one that doesn't make much money.

Now that I'm doing pretty well, I tell people that I write online ads and site content. Lots of people don't understand this line of work and assume I'm some kind of an online scammer.

Lose-lose.

Doesn't matter how many times I explain them that I position sites in search engines and that I don't deal with clients, they just think I'm scamming folks all over the internet, or stealing credit card information...

I have a famous football player in my family (see i can subtle-brag too), nobody gives a fuck about what i do.

lolwuuut?

So let me understand this. OP is intelligent and creative enough to find a way to make 10 times what some members of his family earn doing internet marketing, yet totally unfucking-able to come up with some kind of semi-plausible story to tell them as to where all this money is coming from?

Bullshit.

My question was not about how to tell people what I do. Everyone knows I do online advertising. I wanted to know how your close relationships changed after they found out you have a lot more money.

I stand corrected.

However, our relationship (you and I) is probably irreparably damaged. It's not you, it's me. I'm taking the dog and the gold plated toilet bowl brush when I leave.

You never loved me.

I just tell them I market products and services online.

Hot Chick: "What do you do exactly?"

Me: "I market products and services online"

Hot Chick: "oh"

Me: "Yeah I represented some really big brands at 1 point"

Hot Chick: "My panty's are soaking wet now"

Me: "I get that a lot"

I just tell them the truth.

But then again, I don't make like $800 thousand million trillion dollars a month like everyone else on the forum.

I tell my friends and family I ball out of control, wear Prada, Gucci and whatever else is 80% off at Neiman Markus, a size 1 women's engagement ring as a pinkie ring, hire all my family, friends, and their girlfriends to work at my company and buy my father's Lincolns and Range Rovers when they're 10 years old.

Good thread.

So the over all view is .... dont talk about it and dont show it? or what?

Does it cause problems if you brag too hard?

9 times out of 10, people that brag about their earnings obsessively are broke fucks trying to prove their worth to the world. It's a disease more people in this country are catching every day. SPS (Small Penis Syndrome).

Also there is a big difference between making a lot of money and having a lot of money. I know people that make over a $1m a year and still have to pawn their jewelry every month to pay their $15k/mont RENT 10 days late. Sure they live better than you but they're far from rich.

EARNINGS != WEALTH.
