what do you guys like use to save/back up all the stuff on your hardrive/computer in case anything happens to your files and stored information and shit so you don't have to completely start from scratch with a new PC/laptop ?

Dropbox, my own web server, amazon s3, backblaze, external HD is just a few options.

Blue, make sure you use off-site storage.

What happens if your house/business burns down or someone steals your servers/hd's?

External hard drive + automatic upload to my own server + rsync with two other servers.

Lost all my work once due to data crash. Not happening again.

above^^^^^exactly the kinda of shit I was thinking about. want to be as prepared as I can be thanks for the helpful info guys

I use Jungle Disk with Amazon S3. I bought Jungle Disk several years ago when they sold the software for a one-time fee (They appear to have moved to a subscription model since then), so I only pay a few dollars per month to Amazon to store my backups. I don't know how economical this is compared to other options if you have a lot of data to backup.

Jungledisk for me too so far, but I'm considering the switch to Dropbox. For you guys who do regular uploads to Dropbox - what kinds of upload/download speeds are you seeing?

I have really fast broadband (up and down), but somehow Jungledisk uploads only use a fraction of that and it's painfully sloooooooooow. I also suspect Dropbox might be a cheaper option but I dunno.

I use mozy and have been pretty happy with it so far. I may look at some of the other options listed but at this point I really see no reason to switch.

I back my stuff up onto one of these

I use crashplan on all my computers. I paid for 4 years upfront and they give you up to 10 computers with unlimited data storage.

They also can back up locally to your network too so you can have this offsite and on your local HD too.

I use Truecrypt on all my sensitive files I upload to crashplan and I also use a couple dropbox accounts as well for sync'ing up common files too. I also have PureSync running which is kinda like dropbox but on your local network too...
