If you dont get what you paid for, call your debit card copmany and say you were frauded. They will credit you as courtesy and recover funding usually.

It depends on the level of trust with the person, if you do not know them 100% use escrow and make sure you have a number of ways to contact them that is not online. Phone numbers, personal information is key.
