What type of 9-5 job would compliment online entrepreneurship well?

I know everyone does not want a job. But doing a 9-5er and WF work on the side at least for the few years is probably what many people are going to realistically do.

What sort of job/career would be a good compliment? Some thoughts:

  • Very limited overtime. It'd be very hard to do stuff on the side if you get home at 8pm every night.
  • No work-intensive certifications to get. That rules out CFA (finance) and CPA (accounting).
  • Low stress. It'd be very difficult to work another 3 hours after your 9-5er if you're really stressed out.
  • [Bonus] - lots of downtime. Any job that you can do WF shit at work is gold.
  • [Bonus] - skills compliment - Think programming/web developer/etc.
  • [Bonus] - Good hours = more time for WF work

A 9-5 that actually earns you some cash is important - a few K in seed money is hard to come by when you're scraping by on 35k a year.

When you're first starting up those PPC campaigns you'll be amazed how quickly AdWords takes your dough and doesn't convert. ;)

When I first started in online shit I was the head bouncer at the biggest nightclub in my city, I was making around $40k-$50k a year working 4 nights a week at about 6-7 hours a night. It was the perfect job, work from 9pm - 4am 4 nights a week and still be able to work 12+ hours a day on the online shit.

40k-50k for 30 hours of work? WOW. Unfortunately I'm just not physically big enough to do that type of work.

How about a server admin? I did some light admin work back in the day, and it was nice. As far as labor intensity went, when it rained, it poured. However, a good part of the day was spent lounging around. The network was stable too, I wasn't just slacking off. Most BH stuff would look productive to prying eyes as well. Not to mention all of the equipment, of course.

Insurance office. It's easy to get into, you sit at a computer all day with internet access and the only time you have to do any work is when you have a customer...a majority of the time at work I'm just surfing or working on my forums it's awesome

Be a night time security guard who sits watching security monitors. While you're checking the monitors for miscreants/armed robbers/zombies you have your laptop and work on your websites.

Great idea. I work security currently full time, and do some computer tech work on the side as well. I haven't had the luck though of finding a location where I can just sit and watch monitors though. I do however have a real easy post.

Before I started this online stuff as my full time income, I worked as a chef (and still do 1 or 2 days a week because my employers are damn cool and like family to me and give me time off whenever I have a project to do, and I get to work around MY schedule). I don't have access to a computer while working my shift, but the beauty of working in that field is that shifts are short and sweet, leaving you plenty of time to work on your online empire. Plus, the pay isn't half bad if you've got the right certs and experience. It'll be enough to fund the roots of an online empire, trust me. I made it work, anyone can. Now 95% of my income is online.

Security guard - doesn't that stuff pay like $8/hour?

Insurance office - what sort of work do you do?

Server admin - What kind of education/certification is needed?

Security Guards get paid quite a bit more than that around here. My buddy was making $15/hour at a local mall. Still not great, but its more than what I make at my intern desk job.

Grow weed in your closet and then put ads up on craigs list with secret codes so people know you're holdin. It's a 9pm-5am job, but hey 9-5 is 9-5, am I right? Probably not.

9-5 job... ayeee.. well if you HAVE to do it.. get a job with a company doing what your going to do and get free training =X
