If you're driving, you can get away with "highway robbery" behind the wheel. Plenty of long stretches of road to let a car run free...:338:
Oh & all the college towns are fun to check out if you're still into that.
Outside of Austin (about 30 min) is the Salt Lick BBQ (The Salt Lick). I was down there for a bachelor party and we had a great time. It was featured on an episode of Man vs. Food.

LMAO ok fine fine, Dallas is a shithole in most places. BUT Fort Worth is pretty. There are lots of Texas-y things to do... hell I think the rodeo there is fun. If you are traveling alone the cowboy bar scene in downtown Fort Worth (stockyards) is a good time. Like 30 bars all within a couple of blocks. Very Texas.
99% of Fort Worth is a shithole, too. Arlington is where everyone goes to have fun, including The Cowboys and The Rangers, Six Flags, several malls, etc.
Austin is the shit. Absolutely incredible music scene. But you probably knew that.
I've just driven through West Texas a couple times, but to say it's uninspiring would be an understatement. San Antonio seemed like a pretty cool town though.
Friendly people, those Texans. And they like their meat. Meat grilling and barbecuing joints abound.

West Texas has nice pockets - look for state parks, caverns and (if you're brave enough) border towns.
The panhandle is good for serious cowboy moments. The Big Texan, the Cowboy museum, awesome open landscapes.
Dallas sucks.
Austin and the Hill Country have plenty to offer. Check out downtown Austin and Lake Travis. Luckenbach, Shiner and New Braunsfels all have a lot to offer - hiking, tubing, beer, music, etc.
Houston does the space thing very well and we have Galveston nearby with ugly beaches, but nice Moody Gardens and the Pier activites. I live within minutes of NASA and the Space Center and they never cease to be interesting to walk through and see. Kemah is fun to take in as well, and they start Rock the Dock soon. The Museums are also world-class. There's quite a bit to do in midtown and near the Galleria as well including eat amazing things. There's a reason so many Houstonians carry extra weight. It's a shame you weren't here a month or two ago and you could have enjoyed the Rodeo.

medieval times is a must. its crawling 500 yards through a river of shit smelling nerdiness you can't even imagine and coming out clean on the other side.
