Before anyone says anything, its my fault for not having a suitable backup machine to work on. In any case only mere days after I not only upgraded the macbook's memory to 4GB, but also had Apple replace my bloated battery with a brand new one, the keyboard/trackpad stops working (albeit I think kids + root beer has a tendency of doing that).
Course in all my attempts to clean out the keyboard, it just got worse to where if I did manage to boot up the keyboard would constantly click or type on it's own and such, to the point where eventually the power button just stopped working. And when that happened I wasn't able to use external devices to compensate.
To my digress Apple wanted 299$ to do overall repairs to a machine thats half a year out of it's 1 year apple care warranty. Well meh, its probably only 200 more for a used one of the same model, so screw that.
Then course I'm checking out the ifixit.com website where I've seen guides to disassemble my macbook before (was trying to fix the CDRW drive that was dead). And course in their parts list they had a white 'fair' grade one for 119$ which was supposed to have a bit of scratches, chips and what not, and then the top condition ones were around 160 for white and 180 for black. So... ugh.
So thinking... well hell, why not try Ebay. Sure enough there were plenty, course plenty of dead ones like mine to start with. Managed to find one that was listed as a white (but was actually black) for 22 USD including shipping, with a non-DOA guarantee. Figured hell why not, only 22 bucks, and I know how to put em in.
Keyboard shows up, the end of the cable doesn't have that connector block required to connect to the logic board ('aww shit!')... but then I figured maybe my old cabling is fine, so I pull that out, and slide it into place on the black one, and install it, yay it works.
Not only did it work, but this thing is close to brand new in condition, with the exception of a single hairline scratch on the right palm rest and a tiny dimple next to the return key that I didn't even notice til it was mentioned in the listing. So no longer have that chipped edge on the right palm rest like I had on my last two keyboards (the first was replaced by apple as the defect was covered, but then it of course chips again).
So... I figured most of my function keys are still pretty from my white keyboard...
So not only back in working order, but c0d3r-stylin too.
