Where exactly is data stored besides the hard drive?

I had my laptop screen go bad and need to send it in for a warranty repair. I used this laptop for business purposes, so it has credit card and bank info on it. I really don't want someone stealing my info, so how can I prevent this when I send it in?

They told me I can take my hard drive out first and just send the rest of the laptop. Can't people get your data from the RAM somehow as well?

Oh wow.

I'll say this as nicely as I can: No, you computer illiterate moron, the hard drive is the only persistent storage. Everything in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off.

Don't listen to these guys. Your RAM has a secret memory unit that stores everything that is typed. So does your CPU, but only if it's an Intel. And since you have a laptop, you'll want to keep the battery too, it sometimes can save information as well.

Make sure you uninstall the bootstrap and the rootkit as well. they can get into those and steal information especially if you forget to change your rootkit fluid or grease the bootstrap bearings.

It happened to me once so I had to use a gangling wrench to tweak the RAM driver to .001 certoffs.

Of course you could get lifelock and solve the problem just as easy. PM me for a link.

Don't listen to these guys. They don't know anything about computers, and I was a technician for many years at an Apple-certified repair station.

LCD screens, such as those you find on laptops, have intermediary memory storage capacity of graphic images. Meaning that data graphic overruns are probably being stored within the screen itself. In plain English: backup files of all the porn you ever looked at, and any compromising photos you ever processed, are still embedded in LCD memory.

It's highly improbable that your data would be compromised by sending the laptop in for repairs, but a chance that your graphic images could be accessed by techs exists.

To prevent this, you should remove the screen and dispose of it, and bring only the keyboard and hard drive in for repair. The only way to permanently remove the images from LCD memory is to destroy the screen. Good luck.

They usually swab the keyboard and screen for DNA so stop jerking off to skittles you fucking pedo.

This is the part where Srewob gives us a link to the fantastic memory eraser he found for only $87.
