I think they might be. If you cover up all the things around squares A and B with your hands or something you'll see the colors are actually similar if not the same.
A popular illusion of course, if you were to use photoshop the area of Square A covered by the box is 119, 119, 119, the area B is 120,120,120 very close, though without the box above A it would have been just as dark as the rest, but the color shift surrounding that region of A fucks with your eyes (mentally).
This is proof if for nothing else that you shouldn't really try to calibrate your monitors visually lol.
They are for me - I floated over them with Colorzilla and I get #777777 to #787878 for both squares.
Crop everything else out and here's what you get:

aye they are the same color, the mind fuck is that your brain sees the dark squares and the pattern they are in and is trying to convince you that its darker.
