Where to invest $50k to earn a decent % return?

C'mon it depends upon you. If you want to play safe, Than invest in Bonds or Securities, If you want to take risk and get good ROI, than try to invest on some product based company. You should be clear on your thoughts

I like the idea of peer lending for lots of reasons. You do take a risk, but you have some control over the risk - rather than just sticking your money in a bank and letting them handle it - with imperfect results, as we've seen over the last few years.

I guess the idealistic part of me likes the thought of helping somebody get their car fixed or take their kid to the dentist without them having to go the payday loan route too. I'm not sure if that's what I'd find since i haven't really checked the site much.

But yeah, as a diversion too. It might be sort of fun to play this game with a very modest starting investment. Obvously we IMers are a people who enjoy the "game" part of our work.

You can if you'd like - as a general rule of thumb (this is all personal) I list the notes at the outstanding balance of the loan (principle). many of the loans end up getting bid up by buyers who are bidding for the more lucrative notes in the market place.

You won't make millions following this strategy - but I can pull off decent returns while keeping myself entertained - I actually enjoy doing it. Little kid fantasy of being a "trader" I guess.

Have you used this?

No. I am about to invest a crapload of money back into my business, which is what we all should really be doing. Just adding another viewpoint.

But for now, my cash is rotting in a "high-yield" savings account making dick. I want to have it available for the upcoming projects this year, but if I don't spend it all, I might give something like this a shot.

Money market account? Good god, stay away from anything that is closely tied to what Fed is doing. At your age you should have the majority of your investment stash in mutual funds or individual stocks (hell, AAPL has gone up 25% in the last 45 days)

Talk to a local investment firm in person and have them manage it for a small fee if you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself. There are ton of options out there.

Private banking in switzerland. 100k min, 10% a year. Doesnt help the op though

Put your $50k in a bank savings account @ 3%, when you get your $1500 back at the end of the year give $1400 to the first passer by.

Open a fixed deposit in a south asian country bank, they would give you around 15% yearly interest for a one year FD. Money comes with no effort. Example - HSBC

Which country? The highest rate I can find is 9% at HSBC India.

Pick the right country and you'll also get a good exchange rate bump as the USD continues to be debased.

I would put a down payment on a 3 family house. Actually saving to do that right now and hopefully will save enough before prices start to climb.

If I was in the U.S. I would do this ^ in one of a few select markets that got hammered but will one day (3 to 5 years) come back strong). In the mean time use aggressive depreciation schedule + every tax break and incentive you can find to reduce the tax burden on your other income.

ITT: people talking out their ass about investing.

every one of these comments makes me laugh.

wat, you've got to invest in really low grade loans to get this

i'd like to see your real net annualized return after a couple years and all eventual defaults are accounted for

No one defaults on him, because he has 2 gold guns.

Just a suggestion: Why not put your money on a Time Deposit on different banks? You will have percentage of income there every month. But the percentage of it will depend on the policies of the bank itself. As far as I know you could have minimum of 5% interest every month. But the percentage will vary on how long you will let your money stay with on their account.

Anyone ever day traded TZA/TNA? its triple leveraged, fun and scary!!

I know a guy who quit a really good job and just bets on which way the market moves. It it goes down and you hold TZA you make a great return, inverse for TNA. But you can get nailed if you aren't careful.
