Downtown Calgary, plus a good amount of the surrounding areas / towns are currently flooded. So this guy decides to jack up the price of a bag of ice to $20.

What a prick. Should organize a flash mob -- have 200 people walk in at the same time, and each grab a bag of ice for free. Treat people how you want to be treated.

PS. Thinking about it, guerilla is probably right in the middle of this flooding right now.

Still hate the government, and are wishing for anarchy and to be left alone?

This video is about a different situation, but the same concepts apply here:

Considering your view on this you're on a wrong forum my friend. We make a living profiting off people here, not charity

matt, how much would you pay for a bottle of water if being alone in the middle of Sahara desert without any outer help? $3.50?
for money people can sell their mother, in some countries mothers sell children for $150 per new born.

If the demand for the ice has increased, why wouldn't the price? Isn't that econ 101?
No that's capitalism 101. Capitalism is only 1 economic system. It's a good one, we shouldn't abandon it, but this situation highlights some of its flaws.

I just hope one day we'll be able to talk about perhaps, maybe, evolving it a little bit without conservatives losing their shit before the conversation even starts.

“It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.’ But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.” - Murray Rothbard

It's called price gouging and is illegal in a lot of places. Besides that, it's just a dick move.

Yeah it's a gong show in here. Had to evacuate our place 2 days ago. Now staying at my girlfriend's brother's in the south.

Supermarkets all ran out of bottled water and ice... people are scared even though the city said there was no absolutely no danger in drinking tap water.

Things are getting better though... this is my neighbor lol:

What flaw is that? You're not being forced to purchase from him; if you don't like his prices take your business to the competition.

Forcefully controlling the prices of a merchant's products/services is tantamount to slavery. You vote with your wallet - if he priced too high, less people will buy and he'll lose money.

Capitalism isn't true capitalism unless it's laissez-faire.

LOL.

@ Getting mad over $20 Ice demand.

You don't see anyone doing anything about BS Oil and Gas prices.

People can charge whatever they want, and if you don't think it's valuable don't buy it.

Only thing I think should have reasonable limit is food and healthcare, everyone should have the chance to fulfill a meaningful complete life.

Ice is more or less "comfort"

Still a dick move, nonetheless, glad to know the community who supports his business now know his real moral/motive.

I'd say one of the most obvious flaws of capitalism is that it doesn't place a realistic value on the health of the ecosystem or natural resources.

Extrapolating our current system into the future with no modifications will result in environmental collapse.

And, irreplaceable natural resources, most notably oil, are horrendously undervalued, as they're subject to price discovery that is based solely on current supply, demand, and cost of production. In reality, oil is far more valuable than is reflected in its current price. This will be painfully obvious to everybody in fifty years.

And, the environmental impact of extracting and burning fossil fuels isn't even in the equation.

Thank you for your time.
