mindless arpeggios

ok, I've been playing guitar for over 12 years and have heard them all.

First of all, Yngwie Malmsteen is barely a musician. Music is about feeling, soul, beauty... seeing how fast your fingers can move might make your girlfriend happy but doesn't always make for good music. Have you actually tried to listen to an entire one of his albums?

It takes a really talented guitarist to display a high level of technical agility while NOT sounding like your mindlessly cycling through arpeggios. In fact, if you google "arpeggios", Yngwie Malmsteen is the top youtube video :tongue2:

There is no shortage of great guitarists, but of the super famous bunch with high technical abilities and still great music there are only a few:
Eric Johnson
john petrucci
van halen (couldn't resist as he was my god for a while)
les paul (created the damn electric guitar and pretty much mastered it first)

Steve Vai is amazing and has way more self control than Yngwie, but still not enough.

Fuck all that playing fast for the sake of playing fast. I will take a guitar player with soul anyday.

Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, John Frusciante, Steve Cropper, Johnny Marr, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker.

As Miles Davis use to say, "You don't play the notes, you play the spaces".

The two with the most soul and feeling I loved growing up were Van Halen and Mark Knopfler.

But then Knopfler went over to the Dark Side of country music...

Vai and Vaughn were both awesome too.

Leave Yngwie alone! Super fast neo-classical music is his niche. If all the guitarists out there were trying to be BB King we'd be living in a very boring world.

Yngwie can play "soulful" if he wants to... for example:

I don't listen to enough rock type music to make a comment worth anything, but as a lover of Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, will always be king. Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing are moments of pure and unadulterated genius.

Need to mention Clapton and Hendrix as well, they're alright. :)

Speaks to my soul.

some good stuff above,

David Gilmour - trippy stuff
George Harrison - solo stuff
Alex Lifeson - nothing heavier in the mid 70's, Getty was a mad bassist, Pert was amazing
Mark Knopfler - nuff said
Niel Young - fucking wildman

Jeff Healy - RIP

oh yeah...ummm...Prince - if you get dragged to a concert by your woman, and he throws out a solo, your fucking jaw will drop.
