Why are you still using Dropbox?

I tried the Dropbox, it didn't make my life easier, so I closed the account. I haven't had an issue sending or receiving files before or since, so I don't see the point.

It didn't work out for you, so you assume its useless for everyone. Think about that.

I didn't assume it was useless for everyone, I just said I don't get it. There are situations where I could see it being useful (as Fatbat pointed out), especially as a backup for sites and whatnot.

from the reddit thread about it:

""Just so we get a clear list.
1) She was part of the administration that started the Iraq War.
2) She is on the record supporting Anonymous Bulk Data Collection
3) She is on the record supporting Warrantless phone taps
4) She is on the record supporting the Patriot act.
5) She was part of the administration, that created, wrote, and legalized the Patriot Act.

Now she wants you to trust her with you data.""
I can just see the Dropbox CEO now:

"Leeza, we have no interest in how your political connections might benefit Dropbox.

Instead what we really want is for you come on board and decide for us what to do with Dropbox user data and who can access it."

I am moving from dropbox and hells na am I not moving to G.

I think I am going mediafire or https://mega.co.nz. They both have 50gb for free.
Only thing that sucks on mega is if you forget your password there is no recovery.

All the data in encrypted on mega and they even use a cool little game to strengthen your RSA key when signing up. You can see it here and also see how a bit more about how the new mega works.

Free File Sharing and Storage made Simple.

Another correction. 10gb free on medifire, 50gb free on mega.
2TB per year on media fire for 25$, 50% off sale right now.

owncloud looks pretty cool. I've been using bittorrentsync as a shared folder system between servers. Works well for cross platform situations.

Who is on the board and who owns a company is extremely relevant to how their operation is in alignment with ethics (or lack thereof). I am always checking the source and tend to be a critical consumer. Definitely appreciate the cloud-based services that might not be inclined to censor or use my information unethically. Am making notes....

Google drive lowered the price, I used to pay $4.99/mo for 100gb and they lowered it to $1.99/mo.

But I find myself using mega.co.nz the most, I've uploaded over 100gb and it's free. You can only do 1 upload/download per tab, but I usually upload at 1mb/sec, it's quick and a lot better than dropbox.......

So I'm really looking to get out of Dropbox now since I have to pay them $20/month for over 100GB of storage. Plus, my download rates are only at around 500 KB/sec and have sometimes dropped down to under 100 KB. Not sure if the bottleneck is with them or my cable plan but that is a slow DL transfer speed.

One of the alternatives I'm looking at is Crash Plan 448-bit encryption and unlimited backup storage for $4/month. That's a lot less expensive than Dropbox who charges more and caps your storage. Big companies like Yelp, Zynga, and Kohl's use these guys too so there's a comfort level with that.

The other choice would be something outisde of the US where theoretically your data is safe. Like Norway. Jottacloud is only $10/month and also has unlimited storage.

The questions are: what are the transfer rates to these services and how easy are they to use? And with Jottacloud, can my data be intercepted before it gets to Norway?

PHP:

Your data can be intercepted with any service, any time it's on the internet. It's just a matter of who is doing the intercepting. If it's the .gov, nothing you can do about that.

Pretty much the rule of thumb is, if you dont want it seen by anyone, dont put it on the internet. If you do, it's vulnerable. Is it likely? maybe, maybe not.

What's the point of having any of these services? You can transfer small files over skype and email, or just put the file on your server... how does Dropbox or any of these services make life easier?

Remember drag and drop FTP folders on windows? I don't think this works anymore but it was great in XP and windows 98
