Why is the UK not offering to clean up their mess?

Ok, I'm not sure why no one is bringing this up yet. But that "B" in BP stands for British. They are based out of London.

Had this oil spill happened off of the shores of the UK and was caused by a Texaco Oil rig, you can bet that the UK would be raising a major ruckus. It would be "Those damn stupid Americans!" And Obama would be holding nightly celebrity fund raisers and arm twisting sessions to get the American people to pay for it.

where the hell is the UK? And why aren't we making THEM pay for it?

Getting a government to interfere in the runnings of a private company sounds like socialism to me. Which as we all know has no place in America...

The name may contain "British" but it's well-documented that American bigwigs are pulling the strings...

Fucked up situation.

When the problem grows wildly out of control (the things been gushing for over a month), and effects many of it's citizens and businesses, I wouldn't consider it socialism for the government wanting to step in to get it solved.

That's a stupid argument,
BP are in charge of this mess, for sure, but there are other
companies likely to be liable as well soon ...Transocean - American run,
operates under the Marshalese flag of convenience & Halliburton.

I know it's a stupid argument, but can't you just see the hypocrisy when it comes to the United States vs the rest of the world? Texaco products are used in the UK as well, but I guarantee you this would be a United States problem if Texaco spilled oil on UK beaches.

errr.....

It is a company.

The country it is located in has no liability for it.

I can understand peoples frustration, Gree, the best everyone can hope for is
minimal damage to the environment now, and a big shake-up of the Oil industry when it's all over.

We're working on it

I also heard the Indians are still waiting on Bhopal, shall we just pay them instead?

You posed a hypothetical scenario in your OP and now you are arguing that your hypothetical scenario reveals hypocrisy. There is nothing more to discuss on that matter.

Texaco products are used in the UK as well, but I guarantee you this would be a United States problem if Texaco spilled oil on UK beaches.

You can guarantee no such thing. You can speculate. You can vent. You can emote. Nothing more.

Uh ?

Two things -

1. BP is a corporation not a state enterprise.

2. Your argument is a bit like saying that the USA should be responsible for the Union Carbide disaster that killed 1000s of Indians in Bhopal, or is responsible for the 167 deaths in 1988 on the North Sea oil rig run by Occidental.

BP will be fined for sure and I hope the company pays its dues (if it ever can) but this is nothing to do with the UK government.

Agree with wezcountry.

Until the 1960s, the United States grew, manufactured and exported more tobacco than any other country.

If you use OP's argument, that means that the United States is responsible for the millions of smoking related deaths (e.g. lung cancer) around the world.

The responsibility lies with the company not the country. :rasta:
