So windows 10 just dropped and is available for free to anyone with a valid Win8 or Win7 licence.

In case anyone doesn't already know, Microsoft is giving Windows 10 away for free to anyone with a valid Win7/Win8/Win8.1 license.

If you have a valid licence you *should* have been asked if you want to opt-in to the upgrade.

If you haven't been asked or haven't opt-in, you have a year from now to accept the free upgrade. The upgrade is free for life, but the offer is valid only for the next 12 months.

If you have signed up for the automatic upgrade* or didn't know about it and don't want to wait, you can force the install of Win 10 today.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you download the Media Creation Tool for your chip set (probably 64bit if you have bought a computer in the last 5 years) and create a bootable USB Key with it, you can install win 10 without having to wait for automatic upgrade.

Upgrading took about 2 hours for my laptop, but that is because of the way I have Windows 8.1 configured, and shouldn't take that long for a "normal" PC.

There are some minor issues that I had to work out, but that was drivers/software needing to updated or replaced.

All in all, I love win 10, for me Win 8.1 was good but I didn't love it, but Win 10 is the shit and is worth upgrading to (especially if you liked win 8 but hated the full screen start menu, then win 10 will be the shit)

* Microsoft is doing a staged upgrade, meaning when you personally get upgraded is "some time in the future" (maybe tomorrow, maybe in three months) since they have over a billion machines that need to be upgraded and they cant be done all at once.

Looks like what 8/8.1 should have been.

I might give it a spin but I was under the impression that it was only free for a year, and after your "trial" you must pay an annual subscription? That's nay cool if true.

I will definitely give it a try, it is worth trying for te sake of VR environment at the very least. And if it turns to be paid for after all - I still have my flash drive with Win7 and Win 8 installs

There was/is some on confusion (myself included when it was first announced) over free for life vs trial, but Microsoft has stated publicly it's free for life.

My copy of Win10 is authenticated with a valid licence which is basically my Win8.1 licence extended to Win10.

LOLZ

I hate upgrades, xp was good enough for our needs, now stuck with 7 until forced to upgrade. Free things take time, and time is money, not going to waste time and money when not needed to make money.

Yer I fucking hate how the Microsoft Gestapo kick down my door and force me at gun point to update my PC every time they release new software.

Fuck, the only reason I made this post is because I didn't want to get beaten and locked in a cage again.

Or you know, stop playing the victim and actually do something about it.

You don't have to use Windows, there are alternatives.

And if Win XP is what you like, fine use that. Fuck use DOS 6.1 if that floats your boat.

Aren't ya'll worried about all the phoning home that Windows 10 does? What about the statements in the new Privacy policy which basically says the can slurp up your files, emails, porn anytime they want? What about the fact that you can't turn off Windows updates now? Why is your encryption key stored in the cloud?

Win 10 scares me more than everything else MS has ever done.

Fuck me dead, are you for real? What do you expect when an OS has built in cloud storage (Onedrive)? A privacy policy that DOESN'T allow the uploading of your files to Microsoft's servers? I'm sure if you're not using Onedrive, Microsoft isn't downloading and hoarding your files for a team of suits to peruse and laugh at.

You're missing the whole point of Windows 10. It is now a service, it's not just a single lump of software anymore. It's going to change continually, and updates need to be automatic AND mandatory. If Microsoft can roll out security updates automatically to EVERYONE connected to the net at the drop of a hat, it's going to be the most secure OS ever. If Microsoft can roll out new features in the same way, forget about it.. it's leaving everyone else in the dust. No longer will we have big OS releases, it's just going to incrementally change.

If this scares you man I don't know what to say, it excites me more than any software release of the past decade. I can't wait to get rid of OSX and go back to Windows, this changes everything and Apple can fuck off and all.

I'll stick with win7, because once I saw what win 8 looked like on my friends computer, we had a good laugh about it, only he was the one left with that irritating menu. If I had all that money to pay for EVERYTHING extra that microsoft will be charging now, I would just get a mac.

I don't know about you but I don't like my files leaving my computer ever. Ok so if I don't use OneDrive, or Cortana then my files never leave my computer? I'd like to believe that but I just can't.

If thats the case why do corporate and Enterprise customers get the ability to disable windows updates, or choose which updates get installed? Surely their security is important as well?

That's great but it's not Microsoft's computer. It's mine. If I don't want to install some update (like the one that pops up advertisements for Windows 10) then I shouldn't have to. It's my fucking computer after all. The truth is Microsoft is going to use home users as Enterprise beta testers. Congrats on your new job!

So a lack of control, $10 a year for fucking solitaire, sending your personal data to the cloud, advertisements in your start menu excites you? They've just turned your personal computer into a personal billboard which they now fully control. How long until they start charging for "non-essential" updates or features? I'm willing to guarantee within 5 years you're paying a subscription fee for Windows.

Probably so a forced update doesn't break anything mission-critical.

Applications have been moving that way for a while now. Office 365, Adobe CC, etc. I highly doubt that they will charge a subscription for the OS itself. They'll get paid for OEM/fresh installations and their own software/additional services.

Isn't this a bit like how OSX upgrades in a sense? (Although they do lock out older hardware after some time.) I really hated Win8, but this looks much nicer. Will probably update a Win7 machine and give this a whirl over the weekend. Thanks for sharing.

Yes it is, so why don't you take some responsibility and do something about it?

If I don't want to install some update (like the one that pops up advertisements for Windows 10)

Which update is that again or are we playing the "what if" game?

It's my fucking computer after all.

If it pisses you off this much, stop fucking whining and do something about it.

You could block updates via a firewall, its not like the Microsoft update endpoints are a secrete.

OR

You could not use Windows all together and use an OS that is more in line with what you want.

OR

You could just fucking complain about shit your too lazy to fix and cry in your coffee about how nasty and mean, big bad Microsoft is.

I'm willing to guarantee within 5 years you're paying a subscription fee for Windows.

And I'm willing to pay it, if what they are offering has value to me. Because you know, no one if forcing me to buy/use Windows.

I get it now, the anarcho-capitalism is strong here.

Personally I love Onedrive. It's a great method of backing up my files in case my SSD dies. I take a photo on my Windows Phone for example, it's uploaded to OneDrive and available instantly on my computer. Same goes with all my project files and website backups. All easily accessible from my phone too. I was doing all that shit years ago with Skydrive before iCloud was around. I use two-factor authentication to keep it secure on my end. I even store my various account logins and passwords in OneNote, encrypted with PGP of course.

If thats the case why do corporate and Enterprise customers get the ability to disable windows updates, or choose which updates get installed? Surely their security is important as well?

I'm sure there's technical reasons where they needs options, after all corporations are paying big money for it. It's not as black and white.

Windows 10 ain't for you then. It is your computer, so don't install it if it upsets you this much. Luckily you have choice so go with Linux if you don't want Evil Corp's lawyers reading your latest instalment of the fictional 'Time Hump Chronicles' that you hope to publish.

Why shouldn't we be paying a subscription fee for Windows? You want it to be free just because? It's a pretty excellent way to stamp out piracy isn't it. I pay for Netflix and Spotify. Cunts here pay a subscription fee to use a fuckin' article spinner to churn out garbage content. Many of us are soon to be paying a subscription to post on this site too. It's the way the world is going.

I'll be sticking with Windows 7.

It seems to be the trend these days to introduce a whole lot of features that you'll never use, and fuck the entire thing up.

Windows 7 is still hard to give up imo. Just such a good operating system, and I'm a linux guy lol.

Forced-updates and privacy matters aside, I'm really liking the look and feel of win10.

I'm with icestationzebra on this one though. If you don't like it, then move on. M$ has no obligation to anyone.

I'll agree that the start menu is cluttered up with a bunch of M$ crap I'll probably never use, but I don't really use the start menu in general.

And seriously, you're complaining about solitaire? Who. The fuck. Cares.

This.

Being able to start a word doc one my phone then finish/clean it up on my PC later is a fucking god send.

You want your phone to integrate with office? no problem, that comes standard out of the box.

365? Yep good to go.

Want everything to sync across multiple devices automatically? Got that covered.

I'll agree that the start menu is cluttered up with a bunch of M$ crap I'll probably never use, but I don't really use the start menu in general.

Right click and select 'Unpin from Start'.

The start menu in 10 is one of the things I love about it, that and the action center.
