Several crashes on the Luge track have resulted in the death of one of the male competitors form Georgia. The last turn is designed such that if you should come off the track you'll be hurled into a row of massive steel support beams, not to unlike the support pillars in the tunnel where princess Diana died. The guy smashed into them going 150kmh and that was it.

Meanwhile anti olympic protestors have blocked the torch from talking its planned route through the downtown area.

This is before the opening ceremonies have even happened.

What a mess.

They showed that shit on the news a little while ago and it was pretty disturbing. Why they designed the shit with steel beams like that is just retarded and they deserve to take alot of heat for that.

It's fucking nuts here right now though, bet you're glad you're not here eh? :)

Wow, the olympic committee is taking youtube videos of the crash down just as soon as they go up. Found one that was uploaded 20 minutes ago, and it's down already.

why are there anti-olympic protestors?

Because billions has been spent on an event that is little more than a giant corporate shindig for local politicians and their big business cronies (those that got all the lucrative contracts and juicy backhanders). The construction and planning has run to an estimated 6 billion dollars, probably twice what it should have cost.

Most local people can't afford to attend even a single event (with hockey tickets approaching $1000 a piece). The entire city is literally shut to normal traffic, making the next two weeks a living hell for all those that live in or near the downtown core. Road routes to the local mountains are also severely effected, and those that live in the communities in between are under massive restrictions.

I could go on, but these games have been a fiscal and bureaucratic nightmare of epic proportions.

But all that's irrelevant, someone has lost their life on a track that appears to have been a poorly thought out design.

Yeah, as much as I'd kind of like to experience and see the city while this all goes down, I lived at Hamilton and Smythe, 1 block off Robson and 1 block away from BC place. It would be maddening to be down there right now I think.

LiveLeak.com - Redefining the Media << all recent media. It was there last I looked.

Fatbat, are these just unhappy locals protesting? I think its more likely the usual suspects who protest the G8 meetings etc.

Thanks.

I have long figured that the split of the winter and summer games was actually a financial move in reality. This way the Olympics and Big Business advertisers get a money injection every two years instead of every four.

Yes, it is sad that the Olympics have kinda lost their luster over the years. I too have checked into ticket prices in the past and about fell over at the costs.

I can still remember when a "Professional" was not allowed to compete in the games.

It's a shame to think that local businesses can't really get a piece of the pie and that the residents of the host site can't afford to get in to watch the games.

Well, business is business I guess and the Olympics are no longer used to stave off wars or to create an opportunity for countries to speak of the cessation of hostilities during the break in the fighting while the Olympians compete.

Sigh...

I suspect it's mostly home grown unrest. We have a rather poor part of the city that is the drug abuse and welfare capital of the province, rather close to where a lot of the event is taking place, a lot of whom are activists for homeless people's "rights", low cost public housing and more. Plus we've got a lot of uppity anti big business tree hugging hippy types that love a good protest march. There are a lot of people who feel they are entitled to every hand out in the book. Then again, lots of average joes aren't happy with the way these Olympics have taken shape.

Here's a good quote from one of the protest committee's sites...

"The site calls on all "anti-capitalist, Indigenous, housing rights, labour, migrant justice, environmental, anti-war, community-loving, anti-poverty, civil libertarian, and anti-colonial" activists to meet Friday either at Victory Square Park or at a second location on Commercial Drive near Grandview Park."

That about sums it up.
