Winter Olympics off to a great start...

Fatbat, are these just unhappy locals protesting? I think its more likely the usual suspects who protest the G8 meetings etc.

Pretty much.

The Olympics cost a lot of money and the people protesting are usually the poor who oppose such big spending but who also take advantage of every social service that Canada provides (which is quite ironic).

Unfortunately the Olympics have had a rough ride this year. While the east coast is getting hammered with snow every day it seems the west isn't getting a whole lot - it'll be raining tonight in Vancouver.

According to the news most tracks are designed like the one shown. It is, arguably, the fastest track in the world but there's not much you can do when support towers need to be there (even if you made it where the beams are a curved area he still would've most likely died on impact).

I would bet that the relay will be stopped tonight by protesters which is a shame. I have a few friends out there who all say that police presence is scarce as usual.

...The Olympics, even with the big cost, is a great way to show off the country and hopefully Canada on the world stage will be perceived well.

Perceived as having ineffectual law enforcement and security, that is.

Could simply have a smooth wall covering the pillars. There are covers and hording on all the corners to keep an out of control sled/rider in the track... why then is there a row of exposed I beams on the exit of the fastest turn on the track? It's simply ridiculous.

Poor guy. Those pictures are horrible. Came close to taking his head right off.

I had to wait 25 minutes today while they shut down the entire block so Joe Biden could go into the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The cops were being fucking assholes about it too. So far having it here is being a huge pain in the ass and like was previously said, the events aren't even affordable. I've even had friends kicked out of their apartments because of the ridiculous amounts they can charge to people coming in for the games.

Bah!

Man.. thats horrible.

Definitely a retarded design. 90mph into a steel pole = imminent death

not 90mph garret...apparently he was going at 140mph. Still 10mph from the fastest speed. I saw the tracks in the summer..they were pretty..crazy.
