would you pay 5k for a 3 word domain whose 3 words get:

90,000 searches a month on Google
47,000 searches a month on Yahoo
24,000 search a month on MSN

- aged domain (2001)
- no hyphens
- high competitive niche
- but virtually no type in traffic

I have the opportunity to buy and am looking to get some second thoughts.

I'd have to build a site around it and do SEO etc. but lately it seems that search engines tend to favor sites that have exact keyword matches in the domain. Also very few sites use these keywords as their anchor text as they aren't that brandable but this could be a plus for me.

Thanks

does anyone here have an account at dnforum.com?

if so could you post this over there too? thanks to the person who does this...

How well is it ranked in the serps? Searches mean shit if you have no traffic. If it doesn't rank well, are you going to put in the time to get it to rank? How are you going to monetize it?

There is no site for it yet only a park page so I would be building a new site from scratch...

I'd put time in to rank it by building up links with its exact keyword anchor text and then monetize it through CPA ads. Its a competitive niche so the commissions are quite high... I could do this without buying the exact keyword .com but it would be nice to have and it would probably go up in value with time, who knows. Its just so damn expensive thats all.

But even if I built the site I wouldn't see a dime for months possibly over a year depending on when I get the site built- as it takes time to rank well. But it would be more of a long term investment that could pay off nicely in a few years down the road.

Thx

if you have the money to spend and think you will make the 5k back from the site then i would go for it. like someone else said though, its tough not knowing the actual domain but i understand you not wanting to reveal it.

Type in traffic? Ask the owner. Then check the history, see if it's all good. If you think you can make monies from it then buy.

Obv. it depends on the domain. MakeMoneyOnline.com is great, as opposed to *enter shitty 3 word domain here*.biz.

kthx.

Just to state the obvious - $5000 is a lot for just a parked page. Also, I don't think the SEs can figure out three keywords like they can two keywords, either, based on my experience "keyword1keyword2" is much better for SE's than "Keyword1Keyword2Keyword3". Bots are dumb.
If you have done this type of thing before it might be worth it, but see if there isn't something close to those keywords for under $1000 first.

No, I wouldn't unless it's a category defining name; in that case, make sure you have a business plan around the name (not just pushing other people's products.)

I went ahead and bought the name, just waiting for the domain to be pushed to my account but this won't be until early Jan. Thanks for all the feedback

lots of resources out there that would have asked the question: "is it brandable" - if yes, you're looking at long term success, if not... well - it was only 5k.
