So the exterminators came into the office today. I've been complaining about the smell coming from the ceiling tiles for awhile now. Over the last 3-4 days it's been really bad, opening the windows was even making it worse, and I just didn't get it.

Landlord poked around like landlords like to do. Took him 20 mins to climb his handy-dandy ladder and lift the ceiling tiles and say "Yeah something's up here"

So the pro's come out. They wind up lifting the ceiling tile directly over my head where I sit, and a dead rat was decomposing quite nicely. But the smell wasn't coming from there, it was still coming in from outside.

So they walk around to the front of the building, and ultimately uncover after an hour of looking around a dead skunk which had died in its nest in the sills of the foundation. I watched as they pulled it out with some tools, the maggots and flies were everywhere, the smell was so bad I experienced blurred vision for a second and brain-freeze.

So the skunk was taken away, but the smell remains. They said "it will go away in time" but I've been reading on the 'net that skunk smells can last up to 2 years in some cases. The entire office is just rancid, I can't even go back in there for now, and gonna work form home for a few. I can't eat, everything I drink or taste smells of skunk. This is really fucked up.

Anybody have any skunk stories to share and please let me know about the smells and their duration...

drop a few cans of diced tomatoes on the area

and get used to a daily regimen of applying vick's vaporub to the inside of your nostrils

This is how god punishes you for mowing frogs.

I heard if you take a dump on dead rotting skunk carcass that it won't smell like dead rotting skunk carcass anymore. I dunno, just sayin...

Two summers ago me and my friend found a dead deer in the middle of a field. At that time we were also going through a heat wave. Worst smell I ever smelt.

If it's from the spray, get some of this:

We used to keep some for the dogs, but dogs have a tendency to not fuck with skunks any more once they've been sprayed.

The best thing for skunk smell is to douse the area that the smell originates from with baking soda, let it sit for a half hour or so, then follow up with hydrogen peroxide.

It isn't a fancy or expensive solution, but will definitely work if you're able to access the area the skunk died in. The baking soda absorbs the smell and any oils that are lingering, then the peroxide neutralizes the smell.

^^ This ^^

When I was flipping real estate back in the late 90's I once bought a bank repo house about 3 hours away from my town site unseen. The price was ridiculously low, the bank offered me terms I could not resist and I knew the area pretty well. Even if the home had major plumbing issues or structural concerns I still stood to make a fair amount of money on it once renovated.

So I head over to check the house out after the sale and as I am walking up the driveway, this smell like refried death and marinated shit smacks me square in the face. It took everything I had to not vomit when I opened the front door.

It was a 2 story house with carpet throughout and there was animal feces covering literally 90% of the floor. Dead rats and decomposing food strewn everywhere. Dog and cat shit everywhere in the backyard. It did not help that it was 95 degrees outside and 100% humidity.

The neighbors came out and told me that he family that lived there were the nastiest, craziest, filthiest most disgusting people in the history of the world.
They kept no less than 15 animals in the house at all times

They'd been at war with the other homeowners in the neighborhood for years over their filthy ways. The Parish (county) had sited them multiple times and they were close to taking more extreme steps when the family lost the house.

So I get my crew in to start the renovation process. At that time we could blow out even the toughest renovation project in 3 weeks tops. Well.. this was a whole different animal.. pun intended.

They rip out all the flooring and pour industrial strength oder eliminator on the floor to suck up the smell. It doesn't work. They strip the paint and primer the walls. Still smells. They use more product specially designed for animal oders and it still smells. They paint the walls and it still smells. They use vinegar, they use ammonia and it still smells like death. They find shit pellets in the attic insulation and spend a good amount of time cleaning it up. We literally leave the doors and windows open 24/7 to try to air the damn thing out and it still smells.

Now we are 3 months into a project that should have only taken a few weeks and I've come to the realization that we may have to gut this house all the way down to the studs. Tear out all the sheetrock, insulation ... hell everything to try to kill the stench.

As a final hail Mary we went to Sam's Club and bought about 500 boxes of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda. We opened the boxes and put them all over the house. Shut the house up and left them in for the weekend.

Come Monday morning the smell was gone!
Just for good measure, we got more baking soda and repeated the process a few more times.

Fixed the house up and sold very quickly.

Baking soda FTW.

The best thing to do is set your office on fire and file an insurance claim.

If that fails, buy a few cans of Ozium.

Ozium? Sounds like something we should be slingin'

Ok, put down baking soda as per kimbo's reco, letting it sit overnight.

I need to run into a hi filutin' fancy French bistro and save a frog to get my karma back now...

Hey Bro,

Not sure what state you live in , but there is something called "constructive eviction." This means that if your residence becomes uninhabitable, even as a result of a decaying skunk, you may be able to leave your apartment and not be responsible for the rent still owed under your lease. Usually, though, your landlord must be negligent, and in this case he wasn't. He had the skunk removed. In any event, if the smell doesn't go away, you definitely might be able to leave and not have to pay rent.
